To my wonderful extended family,
I have loved your mother, Hanna, since I was a small child, and always will. Like my own mother, she was always there for me with a hug, a smile, a fattening dessert, a mischievous giggle, and a trusting and supportive ear. I am so fortunate that we lived in the same house in our early years; we built a bond to last a lifetime!
Remember how she was so worried about my skinny arms? She would put one hand around the upper portion of my arm and tell my mother that she needed to fatten me up….Well, need I tell you my mother took that suggestion to heart…and I certainly have not let either of them down! Remember our famous story….yes…I pee’d in your bed during one of our sleep-overs, and your mother had all she could do to keep from peeing herself from the laughter she was trying to hold back. Our mothers loved sharing these stories about their children, while trying so hard not to embarrass us, but we knew what they were whispering about…and we caught on to those Yiddish words too! They were sisters of the heart for sure, and we followed in their footsteps.
And Sara, the apple didn’t fall far from the tree when you were born, as you are the talented cook, following in your mother and grandmother’s footsteps. Did you know about your grandmother’s famous 9 egg sponge cake? It was the best!!! I will look for the recipe, and if I can’t find it, we can try to recreate it …together….9 eggs, sugar…was it a grated lemon or orange peel? Does anything else really matter ???
I remember when you lost a lot of weight, Trude,…Yes, that year when you went away to college. Your mother and I stood at the door waiting for you to come home. I just cried when I saw you…you looked so beautiful, and even then, as adults, your mother took such joy in seeing the connection we have to this very day.
I will always hold your mother close to my heart... I loved her, and your dad, and will forever. I will always recognize how very fortunate I am for having them in my life.
It's now up to us to share their stories with truth, respect, sensitivity and love. Your mother, and father, lived through the Holocaust, experiencing in their lives what no people, or person, should ever know. They survived, and lived to teach us all that anything is possible. What a treasure they gave me, and us.
I will share their stories with all who will listen, and live the lessons they taught me, so I too can enrich the lives of others, as they both did mine.
And lastly, I’m so grateful that I was able to visit with your mother when I came to Rhode Island last October. Those pictures of that day are more precious to me than gold.
To all Hanna’s family, know she loved each and every one of you freely and fully, because you are you!
I Love you too, Tamara
