Richard Johansen Obituary

Veterinarian VISALIA, Calif. - Dr. Johansen, 75, of Visalia died Tuesday September 6, 2005. He was born to Seth and Myrle Johansen on June 3, 1930 in Yankton, South Dakota. He graduated from Yankton High School in 1948, South Dakota State University in 1954 and received his DVM from Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas in 1958. After graduating he entered practice in Large Animal Veterinary Medicine in Yankton, So. Dak. In 1960 moved to Newell, So. Dak. where he continued to practice large animal medicine. In 1973 he and his family moved to Visalia, California where he began his career for the United States Department of Agriculture as a Veterinarian Inspector working in many meat packing and poultry plants in the area. Richard married Cynthia Glover on December 23, 1953 in Brookings, South Dakota. They have three sons, Dr. Jay Johansen, Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. Jim Johansen, Shelby, North Carolina and Jess Johansen, Visalia, California. Richard was a remarkable person who seldom complained or spoke an unkind word. He was a man of integrity. Among his hobbies were hunting, fishing, scuba diving, flying and photography. He was an active member of the Masonic Lodge and Shriners in South Dakota. In 1948 he joined the Army National Guard of South Dakota and in 1950 was called to active duty to serve during the Korean War and was a Sergeant when discharged in 1953. Dick is survived by his wife Cynthia, his son Jay and his wife Marie, his son Jim and his wife Michaele, and his son Jess, his grandsons Nathan and Wesley in Georgia and his granddaughters Sydney and Ellese in North Carolina. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law Bill and Joan Johansen and their family of Largo, Florida. Funeral services/internment will be at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, South Dakota on Monday, September 26, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. A reception will follow the service at the Best Western Sturgis Inn. In lieu of flowers the Johansen family requests that donations be made to the Shriners Hospital either directly by the internet at www.
