Richard Sass

RAPID CITY - Richard Sass, 84, died Sunday, April 15, 2012, in Yankton.

Richard was born Dec. 5, 1927, to Paul and Anastasia Sass in Webster. He married Patricia Seck on Oct. 25, 1951, in Webster. The couple moved to the Black Hills area the following year. Richard worked the first two years for Black Hills Power Company in Rapid City, before moving to Lead, where he went to work for Homestake Mining Company as an electrician until September 1978. Richard and Pat then moved to moved to Mankato, Minn., where he started working for MSHA as a mine inspector. He later transferred to Pikeville, Ky., and then on to Bismarck, N.D., retiring in 1993. Richard enjoyed flying his own airplane and fixing anything that was broken. 

He is survived by his children, Richard (Marilyn) Sass, Wheatland, Wyo., Larry Sass, Phoenix, Ariz., Karen (John) Isaak, Central City, SD, Patti (Glen) Loken, St. Paul, MN, and Sherry (Rick) Charter, Lead, SD; grandchildren, Travis Sass, Tracy Sass, Shelly Sass, Whitney Mattson, Kesha  Nelson, Erin Loken, Luke Loken, Justin Charter and Jordon Charter; eight great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Raymond Sass. 

Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia; sister, Dorothy Keintz; and his parents. 

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., with 7 p.m. Rosary services Thursday, April 19, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lead.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday, April 20, at the church. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery near Deadwood.

Arrangements are under the care of Lead-Deadwood Memorial Chapel in Lead.
