Carrol Kelley Obituary

GREENFIELD  - CARROL WILLIAM KELLEY, 89, passed away on Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at the Care One Northampton facility. He was born December 23, 1928 in Newton, Mass. son of Ray S. Kelley, Sr. and Doris [Philps] Kelley.

Bill attended Newton Public Schools, Tilton Academy New Hampshire, University of Vermont Burlington and Boston University. He was a World War II Veteran serving from 1946-1948 in the Eighth Army as Military Policeman in The Army of Occupation Yokohama Japan. He received an Honorable Discharge.

Bill taught Physical Education, Elementary Education and, Physical Science in the Grafton, Mass and Clayton, New Jersey Public School Systems and coached Varsity basketball, football and, baseball.

Bill was employed for 28 years with YMCA's in Norwich, Conn., Northampton, Mass., Staten Island, N.J., Newton, Mass. and Taunton, Mass. in various positions as Physical Director, Program/Membership Director, Associate Executive Director and Executive Director. After retiring from YMCA work, he was employed with Vermont Associates for 9 years. In 1992 after retiring from Vermont Associates he moved to Greenfield, MA where he worked part-time with Franklin County Home Care Corp, Turners Falls, MA as an Employment Specialist, retiring after 9 years.

He loved sports, playing basketball and baseball in college plus professionally in towns and cities where he lived. His love for golf came later in his life never mastering it, but loving being out there with friends and enjoying the beauty of the golf course. He always said, "I never met a Golfer I didn't like."

Bill is survived by his wife Gail J. Shea, his son Thomas Michael Kelley in Enid, OK and step-children, Veronica Knight and her fiancé Bryan Kolakoski of South Deerfield, Kristina Knight of Montague, Stephen Shea and wife Christine -grandson, Levi Shea of Hatfield, a favorite niece, Judy Tedford of Ormond Beach FL, and so many, many dear friends (both on and off the golf course) – you know who you are.

Bill was predeceased by wife Eunice [Crissey] Kelley in May 1980, son David W. Kelley in May 2015, a brother Ray S. Kelley Jr. and a sister Betty (Kelley) Boyle.

Contributions in Bill's memory may be sent to Wounded Warrior Project, Donor Care Center, PO Box 758541, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8541 or to your local YMCA. Arrangements by Walker Funeral Home, 14 High Street, PO Box 716 Greenfield, MA 01302.

Private internment of his ashes will be held at his place of rest, the Hillside Cemetery Hancock, NH.
