Anchorage, , AK — Margaret (Peggy) Ethel Shumway (Cheves)

Anchorage – Peggy E. Shumway, 90, died on April 14, 2022, at Thrive Assisted Living, LLC in Anchorage. She was born Peggy E. Cheves on July 8, 1931, in Greenfield, MA.

Peggy graduated from Greenfield High School, Class of 1949. She married Larry F Shumway of Greenfield, MA on 11/28/1953. They moved to Fort Worth, TX while Larry completed serving in the USAF. Afterward, they returned to Greenfield to be near family and had two children, David F. Shumway, and Holly B. Shumway.

Peggy was a full time mother and house-wife until her children were old enough for school. She then began work at the Partridge-Zschau Insurance Agency in Turners Falls, MA in 1970.

Once her children were out of school, Peggy and Larry made a life changing move to Anchorage Alaska in 1982 to seek out new life opportunities. She began working upon arrival for State Farm Insurance until her retirement in 2012 (at the age of 81) after 42 years of service.

Peggy was the matriarch of her family (and even her close friends). She was the "cool" mom/grandmother. She had a great sense of humor with a naïve English flair. She enjoyed socializing and liked to arrange frequent get togethers. She was always there for her family and friends, willing to unselfishly provide help and support in any way she could. She was a genuine, loving person whose kindness was infectious. Once you met her, you couldn't help but think the world of her. She will truly be missed by all who knew her.

She is proceeded in death by her mother Ethel Cheves and her husband Larry Shumway. Peggy is survived by her son David (Susan), daughter Holly Steller (Brock) all of Anchorage, AK, and 3 grandchildren whom she adored.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Anchorage, AK on July 16, 2022, at a time and location to be determined. Peggy will be returned to Greenfield, MA for a graveside service and burial next to her husband and mother at the Green River Cemetery on Tuesday, October 11, 2022 at 1 PM. McCarthy Funeral Home – Greenfield MA will be handling the local arrangements.
