Rodney Reno Obituary

Rodney Lee Reno

March 14, 1946

September 24, 2012

Rodney Lee Reno was born at Santa Cruz, California in 1946. With his family he soon moved to Nevada, living in Fernley, Lovelock, and Sparks. Rod nearly graduated from Sparks High School but was much more interested in motorcycles, girls, and shop than other studies. Later he successfully completed a GED. Rod enlisted in the United States Navy after high school. During his four years with the Navy he served on the U.S.S. Kearsarge, Litchfield County, Sedgwick County, and the Cabildo. He served two complete tours on LSTs cruising the rivers and coastal waters of Vietnam and was a member of the LST Survivors Association. He enhanced his mechanical skills in the Navy, with special training in ship fitting and advanced welding. Rod honorably left the Navy with the rank of Ship Fitters Mate Second Class in 1970. During his service he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, and the Vietnam Service Medal.

Rod had a long career as a heavy-equipment mechanic, often making use of his spectacular welding skills. He worked principally at CB Concrete and for the City of Sparks.

Rod had previous marriages to Terry Horvath and Barbara Bowers. Both marriages ended in divorce. Surviving relatives are his daughter Jennifer Reno and her children Samantha and Matthew, father Dick Reno, mother Jean Reno, and brother Ron Reno. He also maintained a particularly close relationship with his stepson Casey Bassett. His home was always open to friends in need, so he is remembered with great fondness by many, particularly by his long-time friend Dave Kunselman.

Rod died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Reno following a long illness. His remains will be cremated and the ashes scattered at sea, which he has always loved -- though usually from afar. His veteran's tombstone will be proudly placed in the family plot at Mountain View Cemetery.

During the time I worked with Rod it was one of the happiest times in my life. He
exemplified true workmanship and skill
and more backbone than was credited to him. Thought a lot of Rod and was always
little sorry for my self for not having stayed in touch. He was the book of good deals to me and my heartiest condolences go out to his dad who hopefully will forgive my obnoxiousness
and other shortcomings. All that aside,
take heart and I know my mom and dad would feel the same. Humbled and love
to his family circle.
