James Pullen Obituary

James Anthony Pullen Sr., of Roanoke, Va., departed this life on Thursday, November 18, 2010, at approximately 6 a.m. in a local hospital. James (Jim) is a retired Roanoke City Police Detective and has received several commendations of merit. He attended the Roanoke City Public Schools and graduated from Lucy Addison High School. He furthered his education at Morgan State College. James was a long time member of Sweet Union Baptist Church where he was a dedicated member of the ET Burton Choir until his illness. He was also a much sought after soloist. He was preceded in death by his parents, the Rev. Aubrey Spencer Pullen Sr. and Ernestine Rucker Pullen; brother, Don Gabriel Pullen; and sister, Doris Pullen Todd. He leaves to cherish in his homegoing and memory, two children, James Anthony Pullen II and Stephanie Rochelle Pullen; two brothers, Aubrey Spencer Pullen Jr. (Lettie), of New Haven, Conn., and Keith Wayne Pullen (Sandra), of East Orange, N.J.; two grandchildren, Dernare Warren Gill II and Denicia Marnigue Gilland; five greatgrandchildren; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends. He also leaves to cherish in his homegoing a devoted and loving friend, Grace Fitzgerald. Funeral Services will be held 6 p.m. on Monday, November 22, 2010, at Sweet Union Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. E.T. Burton officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service. Friends may call on Sunday afternoon, November 21, 2010, for viewing at HamlarCurtis Funeral Home. Interment will be in Williams Memorial Park 9 a.m. on Tuesday, November 23, 2010. Condolences may be sent to www.Hamlar-Curtis.com.

I was saddened to hear of James' passing. I had the privilege of getting to know him and hear him play piano up at Loyalton, where my in-laws reside. He was a wonderful man and I will miss seeing and talking to him. My sincere condolences to the family.

To the Pullen family. It's hard to say goodbye at times like this. We'll miss seeing Jim at church and hearing him sing "God Is" . Jim's voice touched so many people and he truly loved singing..he would always say.." If you are going to sing the song..then sing it like you mean it! and he did!
