Robert Lee Hadden, age 71, of Daleville, formerly of Sterling, Virginia, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, April 20, 2023, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Lee was born on September 4, 1951, in Clarksville, Tennessee, the son of the late William James Hadden Jr. and Ada Margaret Shumate Hadden. He lived in Sterling, Virginia for 23 years before moving to Daleville ten years ago.

Lee was librarian for The United States Geological Survey and The United States Army Corps of Engineers, retiring in 2014. He was a member of Covenant Reformed Episcopal Church and very active in Civil War re-enactments. Being a descendent of both Union and Confederate families, Lee was a member of both Sons of Union Veterans and Sons of Confederate Veterans. He enjoyed Chess Club, Sherwood Archers, and loved to travel most of his life.

In addition to his parents, Lee was preceded in death by his brother, William James Hadden, III. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Eileen K. Bartels Hadden; brother, Whitney W. (Nancy) Hadden of Los Angeles, California; sister, Elizabeth (Dick) Lunney of Huntersville, North Carolina; sisters-in-law, Martha Ann Jacob of Lynchburg, and Gloria (Gary) Levengood of Arlington, Texas; brother-in-law, Randy Bartels of Red Wing, Minnesota; and his beloved dog, Horis.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday April 25, 2023, at Rader Funeral Home, 630 Roanoke Road, Daleville, with the Reverend Richard Workowski officiating. A private burial will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Martinsville. The family will receive friends at the funeral home two hours prior to the service Tuesday.
