Robert McKeon Obituary

BENNINGTON - Robert Joseph McKeon, 84, a lifelong resident of Bennington, died on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2014, following a brief illness.

He was born in Bennington on Nov. 2, 1930, and was the son of the late Robert P. and Josephine (Billick) McKeon. He received his education in Bennington and graduated from Bennington High School, where he had played on the basketball team.

Following high school, he joined the Navy and served during the Korean conflict from 1951 until 1955.

He married the former Marie Gorman in Bennington on Aug. 7, 1954. They had recently celebrated their sixtieth anniversary.

Mr. McKeon had been employed at the Bennington Post Office for 35 years, and had held different positions during his time there including delivery, front window clerk, and had served as assistant postmaster.

In earlier years, he had worked at Grand Union, The A&P, BenMont Paper, Bijur Lubricating, and for 11 years he worked at the Green Mountain Racetrack in Pownal.

Mr. McKeon was a life member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #307 of Bennington for over 50 years, and a life member of the Bennington Elks Club as well. He also belonged to the American Legion Post #13 of Bennington, and the VFW of Bennington.

He loved spending time with his family, taking vacations, playing golf, and being outdoors. He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Survivors besides his wife include three daughters, Deborah Pappas of Vail, Colo., Jo-Ann Roberts of Essex Junction, Linda Goodrum of Colchester; his son, Robert John McKeon of Bennington; and several cousins.

A prayer service will be held on Monday, Dec. 22, at 9:30 a.m. at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home in Bennington, followed by a Mass of Christian Death and Burial at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington at 10 a.m.

Interment will follow in Park Lawn Cemetery in Bennington, where military honors will be offered.

Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Sunday, Dec. 21, from 2 to 4 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church or the SVHC Regional Cancer Center through the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.

The following groups are asked to meet at the funeral home on Sunday afternoon to conduct services: the Elks at 3 p.m., the American Legion/VFW at 3:15 p.m. and the Knights of Columbus at 3:30 p.m.

Will driving back to Colchester from Bennington this morning, after a fine send
off to my favorite father in law, I wish I had said more and should have, for a fine husband and father and father in law. It's kind of hard to do that but I honored to do it. Always remember a man like that is worth
crying over is a good thing.

Cindy and I would like to pass along our deepest sympathies on Uncle Bob's passing and to tell Debbie, Joann, Linda and Robert we are saddened for their untimely and tragic loss.
