Anne Marie Halley
1955 ~ 2022
Anne was born September 26, 1955 in Durango, Colorado. She passed away September 19, 2022 in Salt Lake City, Utah of causes related to Type 1 diabetes. Her parents were Tullius William Halley and Rose Marie Martin. She was the sixth child, first daughter and part of a set of Irish twins born to the family of six boys and two girls.
The Halleys were a close-knit, fun-loving Irish Catholic family that enjoyed church and town activities. They spent countless hours in the great outdoors camping, fishing and jeeping and when winter set in, they hit the slopes. They would often hop in the green station wagon (with a rear facing seat which all the kids thought was cool) to embark on a road trip. One particularly memorable trip was that of going to the Seattle World's Fair. They always looked forward to their annual jaunt to Denver to visit relatives and shop for school. Anne was especially close to her Grandma Martin and relished the time she and her cousin Mary spent with her taking sewing lessons. She spoke often of her wonderful growing up years in Durango.
Anne attended St. Columba and Durango High Schools. She then moved to Salt Lake City to attend college. She graduated with honors from the University of Utah College of Nursing in 1979. She served in her profession with dignity and dedication for the next 40 years before retiring in 2020.
Anne met her partner Pomera in 1989. They stuck together through thick and thin for 33 years enjoying many quiet moments and great adventures along the way. Their love of bird watching took them on many domestic and international trips. Anne loved her backyard birds. She would often sit with a cat or two on her lap, peering out the window while anxiously waiting for the first flock to arrive. Anne and Pomera enjoyed sports. They held season tickets to the U of U gymnastics team, The Red Rocks, for 30 years. Anne loved football and knew enough about it that she could have been an NFL official. She cheered heartily for the U of U Utes and the Kansas City Chiefs. Sunday morning found Anne and Pomera decked out in their Chiefs shirt and ready for some football.
Anne was proud of her Irish heritage. It was very much a part of who she was and she took it everywhere she went. She and some of her family took the trip of a lifetime to Ireland in 2013. She loved every minute of it. Anne was a beautiful person inside and out. She had a gentle demeanor, but beware the stubborn Irish. She was highly intellectual, but so unassuming. Anne loved fiercely and forgave quickly. She was the calm in a storm. She was compassionate and held a special place in her heart for senior citizens and animals. Anne was generous to a fault and ever a champion of the underdog. Suffice it to say that she embodied much of what is good in the world today.
Anne is survived by her partner in crime, Pomera Fronce; sister, Jean Halley; brothers, Paul (Zaida) and Mike (Mari) Halley; sister-in-law, Jane Sullivan-Halley; five nieces and one nephew; special friends, Mary Lloyd Webster and Kris Gilbert; and three precious yet spoiled cats. Preceded in death by her parents; brothers: Chuck, Tom, David and Tim; sister-in-law, Kay Halley; and six dearly loved cats.
The family would like to thank the medical staff at St. Mark's Hospital for their tender care of Anne during the last two weeks of her life. No local services will be held. Anne's ashes will be interred in the Halley family plot in Durango at a later date. If you would like to make a donation in Anne's memory, please consider Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or Best Friends Animal Society.
