Mike Monahan Obituary

Mike Monahan
1949 ~ 2012
Michael James Monahan was born in Nevada City, CA on 12/1/1949 to Alton and Naomi Monahan. He lived primarily in the Nevada County area but had been living in Utah for nearly 20 years. Mike had been ill for some time, but ultimately was taken from us due to the effects of pancreatic cancer on 8/21/2012. He exhibited strength and courage far beyond that of most of us. Mike was always the champion for the underdog. Mike was trusting and always wanted to see the best in others, helping where he could. Mike joined the Army at a very young age, serving in Viet Nam. He loved his country. He respected and supported Veterans, always proud to call them brothers and sisters. Family was foremost in Mike's life. His dogs were his constant companions and were considered family. Mike's NA family also gave him love and support, strength, security, and lifelong friends. His love for his kids, Heather and Roy, and his relationships with them instilled him with pride. Nothing gave him more happiness than seeing them succeed. Mike has a large extended family and dear friends across the country. Mike was a special person, loved by so many people. He was talented, intelligent, loving, funny…he'll never know how many lives he touched. Mike is survived by his daughter Heather Monahan, of Rocklin, CA, and son Roy Cox, of Elk Grove, CA, sister Peggy (Jon) Sanders of Draper, UT, sister Lisa (Dan) Erickson of West Jordan, UT, 8 nieces and nephews, 15 great-nieces and nephews, and a multitude of cousins and extended family who love him more than he ever knew. Our family would like to extend our sincere thanks and gratitude to Dr. Phil Kithas, PJ Jennings, all his care givers at the VA Hospital in SLC, and Harmony Hospice Group for their support, kindness, gentleness, and expertise. A special thank you to Von and Larry for providing Mike the friendship and care he so rightly deserved and cherished.
Mike did not want a traditional service, instead we are inviting his friends and family to join us in celebrating his life at his home on Saturday 8/25/2012, 11:00am.
