Dear Fotheringham Family, Orval was a great man of friendliness, humor, and love. As a teenager I had the privilege of home-teaching the Fotheringham family as an assistant to Alden Thomas. That was in 1960 and I saw the beginnings of a great family. In my adult years I taught most of the Fotheringham children at Cyprus High School and was overwhelmed with the accomplishments and depth of character of each of the offspring. At PTA consultations, and even up to the last time I saw Orval and Ila Jean, I was urging them to write a book on the secrets and processes of raising such outstanding children. Orval's testament will continue to be felt through his wonderful family. It is a joy to have associated with you all.

Dear Fotheringham Family,
I was so deeply sorry to hear about the passing of your father. I have such fond memories of him when we were all younger and going to school. The times that I spent at your house sharing stories and just "hanging out" are some of the fondest in my lifetime. And your father's presence, wisdom and sense of humor were such an important part of my youth. If he were listening I would thank him for his kindness, his words of wisdom, the way he lovingly harassed me constantly :-), and the way he always welcomed me as part of your family. I always felt welcome in your home. I consider he and his influence to have played a major role in my life. I feel blessed and honored to have been able to know him and call him my friend. I only wish I had known of his passing in time to pay my last respects. My condolences to you all and best wishes. If there is anything that I can do, please don't hesitate to call.
Sincerely and always
Your friend,

Dear Fotheringham Family,
You can measure the success of a man by the posterity he leaves behind and the stories they tell of a loving Grandfather. We are fortunate to have met one of Brother Fotheringham's grandsons and his family as we have been serving a mission in Jacksonville, NC. It it there that we've had the wonderful opportunity to work and become friends with Brady and Sarah Fotheringham. They are great examples of righteous parenting and their Grandfather will be pleased in the choices they continue make. It was a double blessing, indeed, to know that Brother Fotheringham only lived within a mile from our home in Magna, UT. I'm sure we must have run into him sometime as we attended all of the 4th of July parades or a community function.
We add our condolences and best wishes to the entire family and pray all to have "Joy in the Journey"...

Dear Ila Jean and Family,
We were sorry to hear about Orval. He will be missed. Dick enjoyed going to school with both of you, and I enjoyed working with Orval at the Telephone Office. We live in Sun City, AZ now, so we will be unable to attend the services. We express our condolences to you and your family.

It's sad to see Orval's passing but I will always be grateful for his influence in my life. I remember his entry into scouting and even though he didn't know much about scouts he dove in wholeheartedly and took us along. Thanks so much for sharing him with us!

Dear Fotheringham family,
We want to offer our heartfelt condolences at this time for the loss of brother Fotheringham. We regret that we will be unable to attend the memorial service, but surely it will be a wonderful celebration of a truly great life. Funerals are certainly some of the most deeply spiritual meetings to participate in, as hearts are tender, memories are re-kindled and love is shared.
I will always remember Brother Fotheringham as an exemplary father and husband, a man of intelligence and wit and one who possessed true goodness.
May the Lord bless all of you with a healthy measure of that same goodness and with the sweetness and comfort of His tender mercies at this time.
With love,

Dear Fotheringham Family,
I'm so sorry to hear of Orval's passing. My heart especially goes out to Cal, whom I attended Brockbank and Cyprus with. My fondest memory of your Dad was the summer before my 10th grade year and I went on the Youth Conference Pioneer Trek and was placed in the same "family" as your Dad. During the trek we were paired up to wash each other's hair, needless to say it did not take me long to wash his and we laughed long and hard about the situation. Another day he assisted me in cleaning the turkey for our family to eat. I could not have done it without him. He was a kind and caring man and he will be greatly missed!

Dear Fotheringham Family,
It has been many years since I lived on Rulon Street with my parents, but all of my memories of Orval and the Fotheringham family are great. Orval's enthusiasm for boating and waterskiing inspired me to get a boat for my family, which we have enjoyed for many years. Our deepest sympathy and love to your whole family, from Montevideo, Uruguay, where we are currently serving a full-time mission. Elder Garth y Hermana Kim Goates.
