Richard Scopp Obituary


Family-Placed Death Notice

DR. RICHARD WILLIAM SCOPP Richard "Dick" Scopp, DDS passed away on the morning of December 29, 2006 while at Beverly Healthcare in Atlanta, Georgia due to complications from Parkinson's disease. Dr. Scopp and his wife of 64 years Beatrice "Betty" Scopp, both originally from New Jersey, resided at Merrill Gardens Assisted Living. He was laid to rest on December 31, 2006 at White Chapel Memorial Gardens in Norcross, Georgia. Drafted into the Air Force during World War II, Dr. Scopp married Beatrice Smith of East Orange, NJ before heading overseas. During World War II Dr. Scopp held the rank of First Lieutenant and was lead navigator of a B-25 bomber in the US 12th Air Force, 57th Bomb Wing, 321st Bombardment Group, 448th Squadron based in Corsica. He completed 50 combat missions over Italy and the Balkans, receiving the Air Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters. After serving in the Air Force, Dr. Scopp was graduated from Temple University Dental School in Philadelphia. He then served as Captain in the US Air Force Dental Corps during the Korean War based at Eglin Field near Pensacola, Florida. Setting up his dental practice in Linden, NJ after the war, Dr. Scopp had a 35 year career before retiring in 1986. He and Betty spent the next 20 years doing a wide range of activities from volunteering at Rahway Hospital to traveling in Europe, Israel, the Caribbean and the Far East. Dr. Scopp leaves his wife Betty, sons Philip of Atlanta and Alan of San Francisco, and grandchildren Matthew of Seattle, and Jessica of Brooklyn, as well as many other family members and friends.
