Jimmie Victor Thurmond, Jr.
August 15, 1934 - April 5, 2023
"He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." REV 21:4
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 2 TIMOTHY 4:7
Devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, beloved friend to many, and a man with a servant's heart and love for our Lord died on Wednesday, April 5, 2023. He was born in San Antonio, Texas on August 15, 1934, attended Texas Military Institute and then Virginia Military Institute graduating in 1956. Upon graduation, he served in the U.S. Air Force for 3 years then returned to San Antonio to work at his family's business, Pak-Mor Manufacturing Company. He met his beautiful wife, Melissa, in September 1956. They were married in January 1957 and lived the "enchanted adventure" of life until her passing after a long battle with Alzheimer's dementia in March 2022. Over the 20+ years of Melissa's struggle with Alzheimer's, he remained a steady example of faithfulness to his wife and the Lord. He certainly knew how to love for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, through sickness and health.
For his sons, Jimmie & Carter, in the earlier years, he was their football coach for the "Mighty Cambridge Colts" and loved enjoying the rugged beauty of Webb County, South Texas at the "Aguilares Hilton" hunting lease. He shared with his daughter, Melissa, a love for animals, especially horses, and God's wonderous Nature. For his grandchildren, he was their biggest fan whether it be watching them play football, baseball, golf or play the violin in the orchestra.
He was a member of First Baptist Church San Antonio his whole life where he was a Deacon since 1986 and taught 10th grade Sunday School for 22 years. He was involved with various groups that showed his concern, compassion, and love for others. He gave of himself both with his time and resources. He served on the Board of the Texas Baptist Children's Home and then Trustee and Vice Chairman of Baptist Health Systems from 1989-2017 and Trustee of the Baptist Health Foundation of San Antonio 2004-2019. He was very proud of the work these organizations do to provide scholarships and grants for aspiring medical professionals and funding for deserving organizations such as the UT Health Science Center Biggs Institute for Alzheimer's and Neurodegenerative Diseases. Jimmie was a member of the San Antonio German Club, the Rotary Club and Lifetime member of Alzafar Shrine, Scottish Rite, the Army Masonic Lodge and Legacy member of the VMI Foundation.
Jimmie was a humble man of great dignity & integrity as well as a quiet gentleness and unending generosity. He had a droll, witty sense of humor and piercing blue eyes and a large, bright smile with a warm handshake and welcoming heart for others.
Jimmie was preceded in death by his parents, Effie Mae and Jimmie Thurmond; and his beloved wife of 65 years, Melissa.
He is survived by sons, Jimmie Thurmond, III (Louise) and Carter Thurmond (Sharon); and daughter, Melissa Dedmon (Mark). He is also survived by six grandchildren, Carter Thurmond, Jr. (Christina), Marshall Thurmond, Lacey Thurmond, Jack Thurmond, Morgan Dedmon, Joshua Dedmon (Olivia); and one great grandchild, Cameron Dedmon. Additionally, he is survived by his sister, Jane Thurmond Gregory; her children, Gale Gregory, and Charles Gregory (Terry); and their children; his brother-in-law, Bill Strock (Shelley); his children, Anne Schiller (Chuck) & Matthew Strock (Christy); and their children.
