Lorene Carper Obituary

August 3, 1928 - July 17, 2017
Lorene May Carper, age 88 of San Antonio, Texas, passed away July 17, 2017.

Lorene was a very gifted musician and dedicated educator by profession. Her mastery of the Piano, Organ, Violin, and Marimba brought great joy to many audiences over the years. She was a loving and steadfast wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She passed away peacefully surrounded by family who loved and will miss her dearly.

She was born on August 3, 1928 in Salina, Kansas, to Roy and Alice (Allen) Buehler. She graduated from Salina High School in 1946 and pursued her love of music at Kansas Wesleyan University on a 4-year Shedden Memorial Scholarship and received a BA in music in 1950. She married Donald Carper on November 21, 1948 and they went on to have two children together, Teresa and Cynthia.

Shortly after graduation she served as the minister of music at Otterbien Home in Lebanon, Ohio from 1951-1953. She also taught Piano, Violin, and Marimba as a private instructor for over 20 years in Ohio and Kansas until in 1966 she began her work in public education. She taught many young minds in the Kansas public school system for nearly twenty years, including her two young daughters during their 3rd grade year. During this time, she also served as the Church Organist in several congregations where her husband also served as Pastor across Kansas. After her retirement from education in 1984 she went to work for Fireside Bible Publishers Division of Devore Enterprises as secretary to the President of Devore in Wichita, Kansas until 1993.

In 1994, Lorene and her husband, Donald, moved to San Antonio, TX to live near her eldest daughter, Teresa, her husband and their two young boys. They joined Oxford United Methodist Church where Donald served as Associate Pastor and Lorene played the Organ during services. They both worked together until their retirement in 2000. Lorene, however, could not stay away from performing in services long; she returned to play the Organ at Oxford UMC in 2006, and continued until just three weeks before her passing. Her love for music and her passion to bring musical worship to others was appreciated by all who heard her perform. Her commitment to excellence in all she did was shown through her lifetime of serving others.

Lorene was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Donald. She is survived by her two loving daughters and their husbands: Teresa Carper-Espino (Mario) San Antonio, TX and Cynthia Maronick (Jim) of Lakewood, CO; Four grandchildren: Mario Allen (Meghan Oliver) & Nicolas Espino, San Antonio, Texas, Erin & Sarah Maronick, Lakewood, CO; her two great-grandchildren: Mailey and Maddox Espino; as well as many nieces, nephews, family & friends.

The family would like to thank the Nurses and Doctors of St. Luke's Baptist Hospital for the loving care provided during her illness.
