Lucy Steinberg Obituary

January 24, 1925 - March 18, 2016
Lucy Elizabeth Steinberg died Friday, March 18, 2016, in Austin, TX. She is survived by her husband, Malcolm Steinberg, her children, Malcolm Steinberg Jr., Jonathan Steinberg and wife Mary Ingle Steinberg, daughter Carolyn Ramirez Steinberg and husband Berardo Ramirez, her three grandchildren Jacob, Samuel (and his wife Haley) and Matthew Steinberg and fiancé Brea Satterfield, niece Cynthia Ellis Leonard McWhirter (and spouse Darien McWhirter), and numerous cousins and friends. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM at Temple Bethel, San Antonio, on Tuesday, March 22nd.

Elizabeth was born January 24, 1925, in Edwards, Oklahoma, daughter of Lucy Harper Story and Albert Bacon Blake. She did her undergraduate work at the University of New Mexico, and held a Master's degree in violin performance from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. She was an accomplished and passionate violist, but her love of the arts did not stop there. She was a sculptor, a painter and a writer, a free spirit, and a self-proclaimed Buddaho (part Buddhist, part Navajo). She loved bright colors and exotic foods and to travel to places like Turkey and yoga camps in Mexico.

She met her husband by asking him directions to the Louvre Museum in Paris shortly after WWII. She founded the Alamo Heights String program in the early 1970's along with her sister Mary Ruth Leonard (deceased 2013). She wrote three plays, painted profusely, and learned to weld, making large metal sculptures that are now on display at homes and institutions in San Antonio. She loved modernism and the Avant garde, hated clichés, and enjoyed shocking her more conservative friends. Her life-long love of music will be celebrated during her Memorial Service.

I remember Mrs. Steinberg's children--my classmates in high school--as highly accomplished individuals, each worthy of admiration. That seems proof positive, I think, that she was a powerful influence in their success, as well as that of her students. I offer condolences to her family, and I hope they feel her presence forever in the music of life.

Mal, my sympathy to you and your family. I only had the opportunity to know Elizabeth and you 5 years ago, but you added light to my life.

My condolences to Mrs. Steinberg's family. I was in that first Alamo Heights Strings Program that she founded and wound up being a professional musician here in Austin. So, I have her to thank for getting me started on my musical journey and have very vivid memories of our time together. I'm glad that she seemed to have such a long and colorful life. Sounds like she lived it well.
