Myrtle Oefinger Obituary

OEFINGER
Myrtle Alice Oefinger was born in San Antonio, TX on April 7, 1917 and went to be with her beloved Lord on July 6, 2012 at the age of 95.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Donald Oefinger, Sr., her son Dr. Roy Donald Oefinger, Jr., parents Roy and Mamie Heath, brother, Willard Heath and wife Lucille, sister Nell Givens and husband Jimmy ,sister, Beulah Heath, inlaws Roy & Clara Oefinger and their son Wallace Oefinger and son-in-law, Bob Bickle. She is survived by her daughters, Janet Bickle, of South Carolina , Sherry Dalmolin of San Antonio and her loving companion Jim Hicks, daughter-in-law, Peg Oefinger of San Antonio, grandchildren, Steve Bickle and wife Renee of CA., Denise Calloway and husband Frank of SC, Chris Bickle and wife Melissa of OR., Dr. Jon Oefinger and wife Amy of San Antonio, Matt Oefinger and wife Amy of Sherman, TX, Stacey Dalmolin of Austin, TX, Joey Dalmolin of San Antonio, Michael Dalmolin and wife, Sarah, of San Antonio, 15 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews whom she dearly loved. Myrtle was a devoted mother and grandmother who raised three children on her own following the sudden, untimely death of her husband when he was 34. She was born and lived her entire life in San Antonio where she grew up in the Prospect Hill District, that she always spoke of with fond memories. She attended Prospect Hill Methodist Church , then St. John's Methodist Church before becoming a Lifetime Steward of University United Methodist Church. She was a strong Christian woman and church and family were always the core that held her together, in good and difficult times. She loved and cared about everyone and treated everyone with kindness, seeking to know them and drawing out the best in them. She loved the simple things in life and enjoyed music, family gatherings, being in the country, and going for rides, or, as we called them, "adventures", never being sure where we would end up. She was a humble woman, and in speaking to her, you would never have known of her many career accomplishments. She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School and attended Westmoreland College. She was an honorary graduate of Trinity University. She worked at Frost Bank prior to moving to the Express News to begin a career there, advancing to the position of Woman's Editor in 1954, a position she held for over 22 years before retiring in 1980. She was a pioneer, in her time. Readers remember many of her stories. One was "Mother of the Groom", written when her son married. Her knack for gently pulling heartstrings was emphasized. Others remember the story of her breast cancer surgery written in 1977. It was a story she felt had to be told. But the story she liked best was headlined "What Happened to Your Wedding Gown?" She wrote such celebrities as Ann Landers, Lady Bird Johnson, and Lucille Ball asking that question and the response was nearly 100%. Like all writers, she received some criticism. A few even accused her of practicing law without a license for the article she wrote "If Your Husband Died Today", where she tried to help wives over some of the rough spots she faced as a widow and strongly suggested having a will. Myrtle received numerous honors and awards and she was always grateful for the people that she met and the opportunities that were afforded to her. She served as president of Women in Communications, was a member of Zonta Club International, National Association of Female Executives, Council of Presidents, San Antonio Symphony League, San Antonio Art League, Order of the Eastern Star, Bright Shawl, and Salvation Army Auxilary. She was a life member and past president of the Women's Society of Christian Service and honorary member of Coppini Academy of Fine Arts. Until her death, she was a Contributor to the South Texas Newsletter. The family would like to thank Dr. Carlos E. Alvarez and his staff, Virginia Gonzalez-Arroya and her daughters, and Sarah Dalmolin for their devoted love and care over the past several years. Additionally, they would like to thank the staff at Morningside Manor, Arden Courts and New Century Hospice for their special care during recent months. Visitation will be Monday, July 9, 2012, 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio. Services will be Tuesday, July 10, 2012, 1:00 p.m. at University United Methodist Church, 5084 De Zavala, with burial following at Sunset. To the family of Myrtle Alice Oefinger, My deepest symphathy to you in the loss of your mother. I share the loss as Myrtle was a great friend.

Among my many experiences during my almost 92 years, one of those experiences, that was both a learning opportunity and great fun, was being on the women's staff under Myrtle, Fashion Editor. On that staff headed by Myrtle was Mildred Witaker, Fashion Editor; Muriel Burns, columnist; Alice Bonnett, columnist; and myself, Women's Club Editor.

I recall one evening, as we were finishing up a special edition for Spring Fiesta, Myrtle had brought Mildred and me over to help edit Alice's column on the Queen contest. We were trying to decide Alice's comments on one of the most read articles on the subject. Once the three of us were stumped as to what Alice really meant in one paragraph. Finally, we were able, with Alice's help, to get it started out. Myrtle looked up at Alice and very quietly asked "Alice, please use your dictionary" Alice replied, "Oh Myrtle, I would if I knew how to spell the word--otherwise, I can't look it up" Everybody laughed and that was it. Please understand, Alice could get information out of her "400" list of people considered the Elite of San Antonio when no one else could. Donning her A&M beannnie each beginning of futball season, she wore it until the last game of the season was played. Her antics gave us all many laughs, as well as a few headaches. Myrtle was always so calm with her, and always came out with the latest news. Myrtle could always sense what would make the best cover picture and the best stories for our section.

With all her responsibilities as a single mom of three, Womens Editor, very active church member, and avid fishermen, Myrtle lived as a quiet charming person who was always willing to help others.

Sorry I was unable to travel to San Antonio for her funeral, but my heart was with you, and is still.
Love, Gene B. Waugh (Austin, TX)

I lived next to Ms. O on Ticonderoga when i was young. I'm 29 now and just moved back to San Antonio for work. We lived on the corner. When we mowed our yard my dad and I always mowed her to helping her out. Was sad to hear she passed she was a very kind person

Words cannot describe just how wonderful this lady was. I had the priveledge of calling her "Grandma" and she was the best Grandma that anyone could ever have. I didn't live cloe to her so I didn't get to see her near as much as I would have liked to. Whenever she knew that I was coming for a visit, she always had my favorites sitting at her house waiting on my arrival, Ham, potato salad, and Big Red. Even though I was family, I was always treated as her guest of honor, everytime I came to visit. Earth lost a wonderful person but Heaven gained another angel. RIP Grandma and know that my family and I loved you very very much and will miss you!

Myrtle and her son Don were my neighbors many years ago when we lived in the Jefferson Village area. We remember her as a warm and wonderful person and were greatly saddened by Don's early death. Our sincere condolences to Myrtle's surviving family members. She distinguished herself as a prominent journalist and will doubtless be well remembered by many San Antonians.

We're so sorry to hear of the passing of one of the kindest, nicest, sweetest ladies whom we've ever had the privilege of knowing. If you had to describe her in just one word, 'gracious' comes to mind, though it falls far short of doing justice to this wonderful, talented lady. Peace on earth wouldn't be so elusive if everyone could be like her. Janet, Sherry, and the rest of the family...our deepest sympathy is losing this sterling mother.

Praying God can comfort you in only ways He can. You are in my thoughts and prayers. I will NEVER forget that wonderful lady. I believe I met her at the back of the TJHS auditorium at the 2008 reunion. I could tell she seemed to be a very strong lady yet still possess all the positive aspects of being genteel! Deepest sympathy to the friends and family who will miss her but great joy in the heavens now as the truest Southern Lady is there now...probably in charge of hospitality. She always had a sincere, warm welcome and a steadfast example of a genuine lady. Celebrate her! -- Christine Dalmolin Brown (SC)

I didn't get a chance to meet Ms. Oefinger beyond an occasional wave hello, but she did kindly ingratiate herself to my mother shortly after she and I moved into our Colonies North home. Mom was outside watering in the back yard when Ms. Oefinger crossed the street and introduced herself. She was the first neighbor who ever did that and the first to welcome us to the neighborhood and for that I will always be grateful. My mother and I have been wondering what happened to her ever since we saw her house put up for sale; we would like to extend our deepest condolences to Ms. Oefinger's family.

I am so grateful i spent time with "sis" while i was in town last October. It was a special time that I now have in my memory bank. God is surely smiling.

Janet - I was so sad to read that you have lost your Mom. I remember the times I spent the night with you while in high school, and your Mom was always so sweet, and soft spoken. She was a real sweetheart. There are no words to take away the pain; only the knowledge that others care and are praying for you and your family.
I would so love to hear from you, and because I have no other way to contact you, please email me at [email protected], when you have the opportunity to do so.
Keeping you and your family in my prayers and on my heart.
Hugs and Blessings
