Diane - I have lovely memories of happy times with you - skiing, biking and partying with the Torrey Pines Ski Club. You were always a cheerful, joyous, caring person to be around. I enjoyed your surprise telephone call and am glad we were able to connect again after all these years. Blessings to all in your family.

To spend any time at all with Diane was to have your spirits lifted. It is clear from these notes that she was a wonderful teacher, which is no surprise at all. I'm grateful for that and grateful for the time together at THS.

Diane and I first met as young teenagers. Our families became fast friends and we spent countless hours playing music at their home. Diane on coronet, Gretchen on saxophone, me on trombone and their mom on piano. We used the old combo-orch books and had a great time.
We have kept in touch over the years through e-mails and seeing each other at reunions, playing in what was left of the Tucson High Marching 100.
My wife Carol and I will miss her bright spirit and smile.

Sending condolences to her family.

THS 50th Reunion in 10/9/2009

Reading of Diane's death today in the latest THS Badger Nation News hit me like a ton of bricks. Diane's joyful disposition was without equal. Her buoyant personality and charm will be greatly missed.
At the THS class of 1959 50th Reunion, one of the highlights was seeing and hearing Diane play her cornet, with the addition of many classmates, just as she did as part of the THS Marching Band during our high school days. The band's instrumentals were the highlight of that Reunion.
Although her smile and warmth will be missed, it is Diane herself that I will miss.

Diane (Mensch) Pierreuse, was like a sister to me. My parents sort of adopted her many years ago and she became one of the family. When my Dad passed in 1988,(Richard Leflang), Mom, (Barbara Leflang) & Diane traveled together having many adventures. I can never forget the image of my Mom several hundred feet up, para-sailing. I was horrified a bit because of Mom's age, but Diane just laughed and said all was good. My wife, (Diane Leflang) & I loved to go out and hear Diane (Mensch) Pierreuse's bands and tell jokes. Finally, after my Mom passed & if I needed to talk about anything important or not, Diane (Mensch) Pierreuse, was always up for a long walk on the beach. Diane (Mensch) Pierreuse, was a special light and was loved by all that knew her and will be greatly missed. Toby Leflang

Mrs. Mensch was a genuine teacher. She taught us to teach ourselves and loved her students as much as she loved teaching English. The world will be a little less bright with her passing. You will be missed and remembered for generations to come. Jeffrey Atencio

Dear Manu and Gretchen,
You have our sympathy. Diane was always like a fresh vibrant flower. She was fun, optomistic, interested in learning and meeting people. Her personality gave her over to being easy to know. Loved hearing her laugh. She loved her cornet and playing music with Gretchen when they'd get together. We're thankful she was a part of our lives. Yes, we already miss her. We are praying for you.
Our love, Bob and Ruth

I've known Diane for a few decades as part of our social gatherings, ski club, dances, fun events. In recent years we would see her and her band at various locales -- Coronado Ferry landing, Prado Cafe-bar in Balboa Park, and others. She was always friendly, fun and a good band member. Was surprised to hear about her passing, and she will be missed.

It is hard to believe she is at rest, let alone gone.... I met her in my adult years, running, playing some tennis (I was very bad!) I recall her returning from France after marrying Manu, I was at LAX to transport them home, and they ended up spending the night with me in La Jolla because it was so late. What an exhausted, happy couple! I am so sorry I didn't know she was ill, I would have tried to help. Best love to Manu.

Diane Mensch was one of a handful of teachers who kept me inspired and learning through my high school years. Her life and work are an inspiration to all of us who wonder what's really important, and what's really worth doing. She will be remembered by so many with gratitude and affection. A life well lived!

You know a teacher was special when you tell your own students about her. Something I just did this past Thursday. She was so passionate about teaching and about the students. I had her for 9th grade English and still have assignments and papers from that class simply because I loved being there. In fact, I have shared some of the activities we did in her class with some of my colleagues and they have employed those in their own classrooms. I remember going back to CHS as a student teacher and substitute, and she was always so gracious with her time. She had a great sense of humor and fantastic world view. I think those of us who attended CHS were blessed to be taught by some amazing teachers, and Ms. Mensch was definitely one of the most amazing. She will be missed, but I'll continue to share my wonderful memories of her with others. She was truly a beautiful soul. My heart goes out to her family.

She was more than "just" an English teacher to many at Coronado High. She was a life coach, a mentor and a muse, who helped so many kids, at one of the first pivotal parts of their lives, grow and blossom. May her memory forever be a blessing.

Diane - you will be so missed! You always added an energy and wonderful uplifting spirit to everything you did and to all of us you blessed with your presence. Thank you for being you. Love, Kit
