Michael Saleebey Obituary

Saleebey, Dr. Michael Dennis 07/16/2014 LAWRENCE, KS -- "It is with heavy hearts at his untimely passing and enduring gratitude for his remarkable life that we mourn the loss of our beloved father, husband, brother, son, cousin, friend and colleague Dr. Michael Dennis Saleebey. A California native with an ever present passion for the beach, Dennis' academic pursuits took him first to the University of Maine, then to the University of Texas at Arlington and finally to the University of Kansas, where he held the position of Professor Emeritus until his death on July 16, 2014. One of the founders of the Strengths Perspective, a model of practice that transformed the practice of social work, Dennis' commitment to resilience, capacity and his unwavering belief in our better selves is forever imprinted upon our minds and in our hearts. Dennis was the best. Such a wonderful person that was forgiving, gentle and kind. What a privilege to have been a student in one of his classes.

I have just noticed the sad news about the inspiring Mr D Saleebey and wanted to pay my respect to his family, friends and colleagues.

I would like to give thanks to a gentleman and team of individuals who took the time to develop and document such a vital and life-changing approach (in not only Social Work practice but in life and careers in general).

I was privileged to discover this incredible approach and the writings of this inspiring gentleman when I attended university a few years ago. I believe that this approach creates workers and individuals who epitomise the true meaning of empowerment and hope. Those who enable voices to be heard and positive outcomes to be achieved.

I have shared my books with many people in the caring and teaching professions and I have advocated for this approach to be adopted and studied at a greater capacity than is currently being taught and learned in the UK.

This approach has made me a better professional and person. I am truly grateful to you Mr Saleebey. RIP xxx

Dr. Saleebey was my first exposure to social work at U. Maine. I was so shy and uncertain and he gave me such good & useful advice and we kept in touch abit thru my MSW and following jobs in the field. I feel such sadness at his passing--loved him and his support got me where I am. Margaret Talbot, Oakland CA

Dear Jennifer, John, David & Meghan,
I was so sad to read about your dad's passing in the Star Telegram this morning. Although we had not been in touch the last few years, we will always remember Dennis as a good friend whose advice and wisdom never failed to bring compassion and clarity to every situation. In remembrance of a life well lived... God bless you all.

Dennis was a truly good man. He was funny, compassionate, and brilliant. His lectures, though they excelled as stand-up routines, were richly layered with years of practice wisdom and academic research. I will be forever grateful for his goodness to me, and for his thorough influence on my academic life.
