Michael Gunkel Obituary

Michael Max Gunkel May 1934 - June 11, 2016 Michael Max Gunkel, 82, of San Luis Obispo, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully on June 11, 2016. Mike was born in Berlin, Germany, in 1934, to Werner and Margaret Gunkel. He made his way to the United States in 1950, to join his mother and three siblings in Washington. Mike attended Washington State University, where he met the love of his life, Colette. Mike and Colette were married in 1955 and graduated in 1956. Mike then went to work with The Equitable, where he flourished over a 38-year career in management, serving in Montana, Washington, California, Illinois and Oregon. Mike became a U.S. citizen in 1957. He cherished the opportunities given to him in America and was quick to remind us that freedom is a gift never to be taken for granted. Mike was an extraordinary gardener, known for his uncanny ability to make landscapes flourish in any climate. Mike also enjoyed collecting coins, stamps and antique clocks. He loved the outdoors, especially fishing and exploring any beach. Mike cherished dachshunds and is survived by his constant companion, Wulfie. Mike was always quick to help any friend or charitable organization in need. When Mike and Colette retired to San Luis Obispo in 1997, it didn't take him long to lend his service and talents to the San Luis Obispo United Methodist Church, the Dallidet Adobe Gardens, the San Luis Obispo Friends of the Library, Retired Active Men, the San Luis Obispo County Clerk-Recorder as a volunteer Precinct Captain, and The Performing Arts Center, where Mike rose to become a Senior Floor Captain. Mike is survived by his wife of 62 years, Colette; his son Marcus Gunkel (Cindi), his daughter Nanette Mirolla (Todd), his four grandchildren: Katelyn Hunter (Scott), Evan Mirolla, Jasmine Gunkel and Max Gunkel, and two of his siblings, Alexander Gunkel and Beatrice Knaff. His brother Clemens preceded Mike in death. A Memorial Service and celebration of Mike's life will be held at the San Luis Obispo United Methodist Church, 1515 Fredericks St., San Luis Obispo, Calif., 93401, on June 28, at 1:00pm. A reception will follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the San Luis Obispo United Methodist Church (Building Fund) or Wilshire Hospice, 285 South St., Ste. J, San Luis Obispo, Calif., 93401. Sign his guestbook at sanluisobispo.com/obituaries

Remembering you on Father's Day 2017 through your descendents. My father's grandparents arrived in Wisconsin from Germany in the mid-19th century but I think of them fondly as I do you.

Mike---you will be missed not only by family but by so many others. We have many fond memories of you. Our boys (now men) always enjoyed a visit with Uncle Mike. Life goes on but we sadly have another empty space once filled by a wonderful man. Bob and June
