Joseph Herber Obituary

Joseph Sheridan Herber
1920 - 2012
Resident of Watsonville
Joseph rejoined his departed wife, Pauline Durocher Herber on March 4, 2012. He was born in Ottumwa, Iowa on September 12, 1920, where in his youth he enjoyed summers on his family farm in Creston. After working at John Morrell, he entered the Navy serving first at the Ottumwa Naval Air Station, then on the cruiser USS Bremerton. In 1959 he graduated from Fresno State College with a MA in Education. He served as a business teacher for 26 years, first at Clovis Union High School and then at Watsonville High School, where he pioneered a program for disadvantaged learners in the business department.
In 1955, Joseph met his beloved Pauline in Fresno, and they married on August 6, 1955 in Coaticook, Quebec. They adopted two children, John and Suzanne. They enjoyed many years traveling after Joseph's retirement.
Joseph was an active member of the Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and other community organizations. He loved trips to Canada with his family, tracking the weather and watching football. He is survived by his son, John Herber of Manila, Philippines; daughter, Suzanne Wright of Corvallis, Oregon; sisters, Frances Runnels and Mary Anne Pirrone; brother, Bernard Herber; grandchildren, Candice and Shane Herber and nieces and nephews.
His memory will be celebrated at Our Lady Help of Christians Church, 2401 E. Lake Ave. Watsonville, on Friday March 9th, beginning with viewing at 10 a.m., followed by a Rosary, Mass and Burial. Contributions may be made in his name to Moreland Notre Dame. Mehl's Colonial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
