Richard Griscom Obituary

Richard Andrew Griscom 1935 - 2011 Richard Andrew Griscom died on January 12, 2011 at home in his beloved Galisteo. He died in the arms of the woman he loved, his wife, Janice Felty Griscom. He was an authentic, kind, and engaged man with infectious optimism and curiosity about the world around him. He was committed to the spirit of volunteerism and community service, and dedicated his career to making the world a better place. His dedication to environmental stewardship and public service were shaped by his traditional Quaker upbringing on a fruit farm in southern New Jersey. Richard loved to sing and enjoyed many years singing with the Santa Fe Men's Camerata. Avidly interested in cultural exchange and community development, his long and varied career centered around those themes, starting with a Fulbright scholarship in cross-cultural exchange in Germany during college. A Wesleyan University and Harvard Law School graduate, Richard did development work in Central and South America and joined the US Peace Corps, serving in Jamaica, Bolivia, Venezuela, Paraguay, and El Salvador as Deputy Country Director and Director. He also coordinated Peace Corps training programs in California. Richard worked with US Agency for International Development in Bolivia coordinating a rural development program and setting up agricultural cooperatives, and in Panama designing a program to improve the legal system, promote transparency, and combat government corruption. He also worked with the School for International Training coordinating a Haitian refugee program that provided job skills training, and in Sudan training government officials on how to absorb Ethiopian and Ugandan refugees. In addition, he worked with the World Bank and the UN Development Program in Papua New Guinea developing training programs for government officials in health, education, and community development. After he stopped working overseas, he focused his time and experience helping on a variety of issues in the village of Galisteo. Richard also served two stints as General Counsel to the NM Human Services Department. Richard's family was of utmost importance to him and they and all who knew him will miss his kind and gentle presence. Richard is survived by his spouse, Janice Felty Griscom; sons: David and Britt; daughters: Karin, Megan, and Hannah; grandsons: Dakotah, Luke, and Leo; granddaughters: Ailsa and Chelsea; sons-in-law: Brian Boyd and Ben Koch; daughters-in-law: Peggy Wright and Navjit Kandola. A Memorial Service will be held in the near future and will be announced in the Santa Fe New Mexican. Donations can be made to the Galisteo Community Association at 35 Avenida Vieja, Galisteo, NM 87540.

Dick Griscom, my Wesleyan classmate and Harvard Law roommate, was one of the most cultivated and accomplished people of our generation. People who had the pleasure of knowing him were the richer for his friendship. I don't expect that will change over the years. Best wishes, Dick. Bill Shepard

I remember Christmas, 1957. Dick and I and several other Fulbright friends were spending Christmas in Vienna. It wass an interesting cultural/politicaal mix, as we could not go to the Vienna Cathedrak withut recalling the smashing of the Hungarian Freedom Fight in the previous year. We enjoyed tourism and the Vienna Opera. But my indelible memory is waking up in the middle of the night in our hotel in Vienna - Dick's call to his parents had finally come through. And as an observant Quaker, the conversation was full of second person thees and thous. He was an original, and I've always been sorry that he didn't go into politics. The country needs people like Dick Griscon in its leadership. now more than other.

Dear Janice, I'm still in shock and dismay, having just learned of Richard's passing. He was such an incredible person in so many ways, I remember well meeting him for the first time in Vermont as he began working with Haitian refugees back in1981, then our families being together in Papua New Guinea in the late 1980's working in and traveling around that crazy exciting country. He was one of the wisest, gentlest and positive people I've ever known. He brought a sense of childlike wonder to everything, simply a wonderful man in every way, a true role model for me.From Dakar, Senegal, to you and all the Griscom-Felty family I send my heartfelt condolence and love, Jim Billings

Dick and I were Wesleyan and Harvard Law School classmates. We were student governement officers together at Wesleyan, and roomed together at Law School. In the year between, we had Fulbrights in Europe and met in Vienna for Christmas holidays, where he delighted us by calling his parents, and wishing them a special Christmas, in Thee and Thou Quaker. Then we roomed together at Law School, and he was an usher at my wedding with Lois, my wife of 50 years. We last saw him at our 50th college reunion. He was a great guy, full of ability and humility. There are many phonies in this world, but he was the real thing, a gentleman, genuine and personable. His many, many friends will miss him. Bill and Lois Shepard, Easton, Maryland
