ELWYN WILLIAM NICE, 89, from Allure of Prophetstown, formerly of Morrison, IL, passed away on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, at Allure.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 7, 2023 at Emmanuel Church in Morrison, IL, with Rev. Luke Schouten officiating. Visitation is scheduled from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 6th at the Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home. Interment will take place at Grove Hill Cemetery in Morrison, IL. A memorial has been established to Emmanuel Church.
Born on May 26, 1934, in Morrison, IL, Elwyn was the son of Lyle W. and Lucille F. (Bechtel) Nice. He was reared and educated in the Robertson Grade School of rural Whiteside County and graduated from Morrison High School in 1952, where he actively participated in football and track. Elwyn served in the Illinois National Guard and later married the love of his life, Shirley Henrietta Enwright, on December 13, 1953, in Clinton, IA. Their union thrived until Shirley's passing on January 11, 2016.
Throughout his life, Elwyn was engaged in farming in the rural Morrison area and also was the owner/operator of Elwyn Nice Trucking. During the time of farming with his wife he worked for the Paul Schroeder Construction Company, General Electric, and Volckmans Furniture. For a couple of years he also worked for Workman Trucking and VanZuiden Trucking. Elwyn had served as a board member and secretary for Clystic School and on the board at Morrison High School. He was a board member with the Mt. Pleasant Insurance Company and served on the Whiteside County Cattle Feeders Board of Directors. As a believer in Christ, he was a former member of the Morrison United Methodist Church and later became a dedicated member of Emmanuel Church in Morrison. His commitment extended to youth development, as Elwyn served as a 4H leader and received the prestigious "American Farmer Award" during his time in Future Farmers of America. Elwyn found joy in playing softball, golf, and bowling. He also enjoyed antique tractors and was an avid Chicago Cubs and Bears fan.
He is survived by his three daughters: Linda (Tim) McClung of Fort Worth, TX; Pamela Nice of Las Vegas, NV; Judy (Jeff) Meinsma of Morrison, IL; one son, William "Bill" (Patti) Nice of Meridian, ID; seven grandchildren: Erin (Thad) Lycan, Nicole (Michael) Wiesner, Elizabeth (Jon) McKenzie, Jason (Cathy) Meinsma, Emily (Josh) Miller, Chad (Chrissy) Nice, and Benjamin (Leslie) Nice; sixteen great-grandchildren: Everett, Grayson and Camden Lycan; Milo Wiesner; Jaymeson and Brooklynn McKenzie; Weston and Oliver Meinsma; Jackson, Jonah and Andrew Miller; Calvyn and Nolan Nice; Theo, Arthur and Genevieve Nice; one sister, Marjorie (Bob) Traum of Milledgeville, IL.
