Leonard "Lenny" J. O'Connor Sr., of Minersville, passed away Thursday, Aug. 24, 2023, at his home surrounded by his family.
Born Dec. 9, 1951, he was a son of the late Leonard J. O'Connor and Margaret V. (Grace) Moran. He was a 1970 graduate of Nativity BVM High School and attended Trenton State College, N.J.
Len was born and raised at the Washington Hotel and started working at a young age doing whatever necessary to help family. He went on to a lengthy career at Fleetwood Leather Tannery, where he was also a union representative. When the tannery closed, he then went on to be a fuel dispatcher at Indiantown Gap, where he retired.
Len was a member of Holy Family Parish of Minersville and the former Our Lady of Mount Carmel RCC.
He was a member of St. Bernard's Society of Pottsville; Cass Township AOH; and Minersville Area Lions Club, serving as a past president.
A huge Notre Dame fan, he helped organize the Branchdale Notre Dame bus trips for years. Len enjoyed spending time at the cabin in Cammal, Pa., with family and friends, hunting, fishing and socializing.
He was preceded in death by five Moran brothers, Francis, James, Thomas (Evelyn), William (Dorothy) and Charles (Cathleen); father-in-law, James McCormick Jr.; brother-in-law, Albert Roscoe; and faithful canines, Rusty and Rowdy.
Len is survived by his wife of 44 years, Julia Ellen (McCormick) O'Connor; two sons, Leonard J. O'Connor Jr. and his companion, Amanda Houser, of Minersville, and Patrick M. O'Connor, of Minersville; a brother, Edward Moran (Joyce), of Minersville; mother-in-law, Bernice (Wolfmeyer) McCormick; brothers- and sisters-in-laws, Geraldine Roscoe, James (Rosalie) McCormick, Kenneth (Robin) McCormick and Josephine (James) O'Brien; godchildren, Alexis Moran, James O'Brien Jr. and Cathleen Moran; many nieces, nephews, great- and great-great-nieces and -nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 1, from Donald J. Butler Funeral Home, 328 Sunbury St., Minersville, with the Rev. Christopher Zelonis officiating. Friends may call from 8 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Community Outreach of Holy Family Parish, 538 Sunbury St., Minersville, PA 17954; Hillside SPCA, P.O. Box 233, Pottsville, PA 17901; or any animal shelter of your choice. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Pottsville.
