Ivan R. Lund

ENGLEWOOD, Fla. - Ivan R. Lund, 94, peacefully passed away at Pine Brook Rehab Center on Thursday, April 20, 2017, after a brief period of declining health. Born July 17, 1922, in Franklin, N.H., he was a 1940 Portsmouth High School graduate.

Following graduation he was employed as an apprentice machinist at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

During World War II First Lieutenant Lund served as a bomb squadron navigator in the US Army Air Force, taking part in 32 combat missions as a member of the Flying Fortress, "Wolf Squadron" in Italy. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for "extraordinary achievement in aerial flight" before being honorably discharged in 1944. Following World War II, Ivan was employed as an electrician by National Gypsum Company in Portsmouth. He retired 40 years later from the position of maintenance superintendent of their Clarence Center, N.Y., facility.

During retirement, he enjoyed more time for his hobbies of golf and woodworking, but he considered his crowning achievement the design and construction of the Beddington, Maine lakeside log home he built for his wife, Lillian. They spent 30 years summering there and wintering in their Englewood, Florida home.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Lillian, his daughter, Diane, and her husband William Carter of York, Maine, grandson, Christopher Lund of New Orleans, Louisiana, two sisters, Pauline and Yvonne Lund of Portsmouth, and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Ivan F. and Ora Lund, son, Robert Lund, and sisters Beatrice MacDonald and Irene Speer.

SERVICES: A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., on Thursday, May 11, at St. Raphael Catholic Church, Englewood, Florida. Burial will be private at Sarasota National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Tidewell Hospice, Philanthropy Department, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, Fla., 34238.
