Annelies Clauson Obituary

"Frau" Annelies Clauson

Our mother regretfully passed away on April 1, 2015, choosing to close out on her life the same way that she lived it - on her own time and terms with incredible strength and dignity.

How does one sum up a lifetime epitomized by a teacher/mother/warrior's heart? She lived to make the world a smaller place, to help people deeply understand the hearts of not only people a continent away, but also the people around us in our daily lives. She displayed an insatiable hunger for learning and knowledge, whether exemplified through 50+ years as a teacher or still taking classes at the U. of W. well into her 90's (former students are allowed to be 'outraged' that she would no longer take the course exams - claimed that she just wanted knowledge).

Meeting our father, a soldier still stationed in war torn Germany after the war, began a dual love affair with her native Germany and home to be, America. She witnessed American soldiers, after losing friends and brothers in the war, give freely of their meager C-rations and chocolates to the German children and hungry. When she came to the States with our father, she saw and heard so many stories of American families ravaged and hurt by losses in the war as well, bitter against the 'German War Machine'. She became driven to let her new country know that if they would just know the hearts and people of Germany, they would know that people are very much the same everywhere with similar dreams, hopes, moments of despair, and triumphs.

This drive to bring two worlds together fueled the work, commitment, and single-minded focus (that would become her trademark) to a level that would gain local, nation, and international awards and attention over the next 50 years. A mother who barely spoke the language with 3 boys took on 3 additional jobs while putting herself through the tough courses at the University of Washington necessary to get her Bachelors, then her teaching degree, and then a Master's degree. She began teaching German at Lake Washington High School in the 60's and started an Exchange Program with Germany (her own time and money) which sent US students to Germany for 6 months, ostensibly to study, but in reality to learn to understand and love another people by living with their families for this time. The German students from the host families would then come here and do the same, creating bonds that have lasted for over decades. This dedication and exchange program became her trademark as she opened Juanita High School in 1971 and continued to inspire her students over the next generation into the 90's.

She taught into her 80's, attended universities into her 90's, had season tickets to the plays and operas well into her 90's, skied into her 70's, and played tennis into her early 80's. Mom lived her life fully, loving her gatherings and dinners with her various groups of friends, all of which had a profound and loving impact on her life and her success.

If asked to sum up her life, she would not mention the many awards and accolades that she received over the years, but would tearfully point to the letters from the students that continued to come in long after she 'retired', each saying that she had changed their life, or she would reiterate how grateful she was to have come to America, what a great country it was that had given her the opportunities for healing nations, and how proud she was to be an 'American' and part of a country that does so much in so many ways to help those in need around the world.

An open Memorial will be held on Saturday April 25th at the Holy Spirit Lutheran Church in Juanita at 3:00pm. Additional memorial websites - information & Frau Stories at http://www.forevermissed.com/frau-clauson, Juanita High School memorial page and the Seattle Times obituaries - memorial book.

Annelies has been a special person in my life since the 60's She and my mom were childhood frends in Germany and both families ended up surprisingly in the Northwest without the other knowing about it. I spent several summers with her family camping and learning how to cook and bake her favorite recipies. We remained close friends over the years; we will miss her. She was a very dedicated educator and enjoyed life as others have testified. Rest in peace, dear friend.

Frau taught me German for three years at Juanita High School 1979-1982. She also taught my brothers, sisters, and many friends. She was a wonderful person, an inspiring teacher, and we'll never forget her. -Dave Jennings [email protected]

I started in LWSD the same day as Frau and we had many laughs together. My son Erik Benjaminson said he would not have been where he is and has been if not for her belief in his learning and her encouragement to finish what he started.

Fortunately I am still in touch with lots of former exchange-students since having been on Frau's program myself in 1985 and I don't know a single one, who wouldn't subscribe to this experience having been one of the best in their lives. Frau, you made a difference and I will always be grateful for what you initiated, for what you accomplished and for what you actively did for so many of us. If there is something like unconditional love - to me, what you lived seems to be it.

I entered the teaching profession at Juanita HS in 1971. One of the first staff members I met was Frau Clausen. She reached out to me and I will and am forever greatful for her friendship and mentor ship.

Frau was a bridge and a lighthouse in the melting pot. She never gave up her "Germanness" but firmly advertised the American way of live. Like for many her commitment sparked my language skills and provided me with lifelong American friends.

My son, Dan Burwell, who graduated from Juanita High in 1992 spent one semester in Emmerich, Germany, because of Frau's program. Our family is still in contact with several German families because of that experience. Frau was a genius in matching families and situations. - Marilyn Burwell

What an individual. A celebrated life with purpose and impact. Clearly the most engaged, memorable and influential teacher I ever had. I can't imagine how many lives she positively impacted.

Frau Clausen was an important part of our Finn Hill neighborhood. She always helped to bring all of us together, and our family (Lander family) had a great year with Gerhardt, a German exchange student whom my parents sponsored. She always graced her yard, just down the street from us, with a beautiful outside Christmas tree with candles. She hosted memorable Christmas parties every year. My Dad (Bob Lander), an ardent tennis player, played with her and was inspired by her. I feel just like all of you. She will never be forgotten.

Thank you Frau for introducing me to the world. My time as an Exchange Student in Hamburg was so wonderful I went back to Germany and lived there for three years while serving in the Army. The memories of the country, the people, the culture, the history and the beauty of Europe I will never forget and if it wasn't for you, I never would have been able to travel down that wonderful road. Thank you and RIP, Frau Clauson!

As a neighbor on Finn Hill and the mother of two participants in Frau's exchange program, I can say that her presence on this earth graced my life and the lives of my children in a way that was uniquely hers. It was a blessing to have known her. Billie Klein

My condolences to the Clauson family on the loss of Frau Clauson. I had the opportunity as a Juanita High School student to participate in her German exchange program. I know it must have taken a great deal of work and patience on her part to ensure the success of the program. I have many favorable memories of my experience in the exchange program and my German friends. Frau Clauson was a wonderful example of a visionary as she shared dreams of language training and cultural appreciation across two continents. I am indebited to her for helping me experience a foreign language and culture. Michael Wardinsky. Juanita High School Class of 1978.
