Christy TYSON Christy Tyson of West Seattle, Washington passed away on Saturday, January 1, 2011. Born July 15, 1947 to Paul D. and Norma Christensen Tyson in Salt Lake City, Utah, Christy spent her early life there and in Bountiful, Utah. She received a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Utah and a Master's Degree in Library Science from the University of Arizona. She later studied in Mexico City, where she learned to love the people and culture of Mexico. Christy's career was devoted to public libraries as a Young Adult Librarian and Library Administrator in Utah, Arizona, Alabama and Washington. Her enthusiasm and dedication to help people influenced many lives and communities. As a child, the library was one of her favorite places and she always had a book at hand. Outside the library, Christy enjoyed gardening, antiquing and spending time with friends, family and her pets. She was also a movie buff, with a special interest in foreign film. To her family, she was a cherished daughter, a loved sister, a dear loving aunt. A special thank you from the family is extended to anyone who has loved Christy and to Dr. Martha Hyde and all the medical personnel who have cared for Christy. Among her survivors are her sister Jean Tyson of Kent, WA, her niece Jeanie Palmer and her husband Presley and their children Stephanie, Andre and Sean of Newcastle, WA. A 'Celebration of Life' will be held on Sunday, January 30th, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Camp Long Lodge House in West Seattle. Christy is one of my cousins, our mothers were sisters. We have a wonderful
family heritage to carry on. I loved visiting her in Salt Lake and Bountiful when we were children. I love and miss keeping in touch as we grew older but look forward to seeing her again.

I have fond memories of Christy mostly in 1978 and 1979 in Arizona.
Within a year after my father and Christy's mother died, her father, Paul Tyson, married my mother, Irma Lant Shuler. They lived in Sun City and Rexburg Idaho for 19 years.
Christy and my wife and I lived in Mesa. Jean and Jeanie were in Tucson and my brother Mike's family in Paradise Valley. We tried to get together once a month, often in Mesa, for Sunday afternoons together before I moved away. Christy was a lot of fun. I wish we had kept in touch and send our love to Jean and Deanne and their families.

Christy was a good friend, mentor, and profound positive influence on many people throughout the years. I am very fortunate to have had Christy in my life at a time when I needed insight and direction. Christy saw things in me that I never would have seen, and she did this for countless others as well. Christy, wherever you are, just know that you are loved and missed.

Christy did a lot for public libraries and enriched many lives, including my own. I had just talked about some of her accomplishments with a friend when I heard of her passing...the World has lost a talented woman.

Christy was an amazing librarian and her work with teens will be lovingly remembered by all the young people, librarians, and Young Adult Library Service Association (YALSA) professionals who were blessed to know her. Her dedication is reflected in the upbeat and informative pieces she wrote for the professional library literature and her service as a two-term YALSA president. Most importantly, she touched the lives of countless teens in all the places she worked (including the City of Mesa Library in Arizona, through which I got to know her and where she started the YAAC teen advisory group, and where I followed in her footsteps). Christy will be dearly missed.

Christy was a dear friend for many years. During the time we worked together in Spokane, she was a source of support, much laughter and many hours of car shopping! Beyond those days, I have many wonderful memories, including our long drive to Alabama with two dogs and a cat! She loved Jeanne, Jeannie and Jeannie's children and talked of them often. Most of all, she loved those YAs. Her star will always shine bright in the world because of the young readers she inspired and, in some cases, the lives that were saved by her outreach to teens. It was a privilege to have known Christy.
