Ulrich Schoettle Obituary

Ulrich Christoph SCHOETTLE, MD 4-1-48 to 9-10-11 An adoring husband, proud father, loyal friend and passionate child psychiatrist, Uli brought his unique blend of caring, humor, generosity and enthusiasm to all he did. He died at Swedish Hospital in the arms of his beloved family and the tender hands of the nursing staff on 12 East. He is survived by his wife, Vicki, daughters, Elizabeth and Emily, son in law, John Dierks and son, Eric as well as his brother Peter. He is also survived by two beloved aunts and many dear cousins in Germany. Uli's death came after a seven year period in which he coped with Multiple Myeloma under the watchful eye of our beloved Dr. Hank Kaplan. Despite the cancer and a host of treatments, Uli ferociously pursued life, deeply engaged with the people he loved. His years were punctuated with adventurous travels all over the world with Vicki and his kids. Uli was born in Ulm, West Germany and immigrated when he was five. He grew up in Southern California and went to UC San Diego where he and Vicki met. He attended medical school and completed his Adult and Child Psychiatry training at UCLA. Uli and Vicki moved to Seattle in 1979 and never looked back. A gleeful outdoorsman, he filled his weekends with hikes, ski trips and bike rides, endlessly appreciative of the beauty of the Northwest. He never wasted a beautiful dayor any day for that matter! Uli was deeply committed to his profession. He was board certified in Adult and Child Psychiatry. He kept a full time private practice helping hundreds of families. He was on the Clinical faculty at the UW and was a Board examiner for Adult and Child Boards. He served on many committees for the American Academy for Adolescent and Child Psychiatry. He felt so lucky to have found work that he thrived in. He will be sorely missed. Remembrances can be made to: PATH, The Nature Conservancy or Room to Read. Services will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, September 24 at Plymouth Church, 6th and University in downtown Seattle.

Uli and I were buddies in college. He was always the optimist, always looked at the better side of people, and had a high and infectious laugh. I miss him.

Dear Uli,
As your cousin and member of the German Schoettle Family, I have never ever thought of talking to you like I do now. Your death is a loss we can hardly bear! We all will deeply miss your kindness, your warmth, your humor and your understanding.
Despite the different socialization of us in our two countries, we were close in our ideas of life and we understood each other astonishingly. Since your diagnosis, we talked often on the phone. Our conversations were always important to me and I will be missing you painfully. In these years you have never lost your will to live. One can be defeated by resignation only, never out of just having problems, as you always stated.

Dr. Schoettle was our younger son's psychiatrist from childhood through adolescence. In addition to attending to our son's challenges, Dr. Schoettle provided ongoing support and advice to us as parents and to the schools our son attended. Even after our son reached the age of 18 and no longer visited Dr. Schoettle in Seattle, he and I kept in touch by phone periodically because Dr. Schoettle wanted to know how this young man was doing. Uli consistently offered warm steady guidance through many tumultuous years. I feel a personal loss that he is no longer among us, and my heart goes out to his loving family. Thank you for sharing this wonderful man and his special talents with the rest of us; he made many lives and this small part of the world better. Robin Hunt, Bainbridge Island

Dr. Schoettle,
All too often, I still see that twinkle in your eye as you give me a swift kick - I remember the lessons once again. And, I remember your kindness, compassion, and generous optimism that delivered those lessons so many years ago.
Thank you, and peace.

My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief. I didn't really know Uli, but I can't imagine that in life he was anything other than terrific since you were married to him all these years-and you are terrific. May the memories of good times and special moments help you and your family in your healing process. In the months ahead, I look forward to our friendship growing and want you to know I will be there for you.
