Mary Hellmann Gerstle Obituary

Mary Ann Hellmann Gerstle, age 97, died on March 21, 2023, at Nazareth Home in Louisville. She was a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, and was born there on June 7,1925.

She moved to Louisville after marrying Lou Gerstle in 1948. She was a former resident of Amber Oaks in Shelbyville.

She received an associate degree from Xavier University. She was in high demand due to her excellent shorthand skills and lightning-fast typing. Mary was always available for her children's activities and was very involved during their school years as well as her grandchildren's. She was an avid reader and loved to travel. Her biggest passion was following the Cincinnati Reds--she was a lifelong fan and especially loved the games at Crosley Field. She was a prolific letter writer. She typed letters to each grandchild every week when they entered college.

Mary was predeceased by her parents Joe and Eva Telscher Hellmann as well as her beloved husband Lou, her brothers Fr. George Hellmann, OFM, Paul and Leonard Hellmann, and her sister, Rose Littner.

She is survived by her sons Pat (Karen) of Lexington and Jim (Margaret) of Cambridge, MA and her daughter Mary Lou (Walt) Reichert, MD, of Simpsonville. She leaves 8 grandchildren: Jennifer (Jeremy) Alexander, Casey (Amanda), Chelsea (David) Mack, Michael Reichert, Elizabeth (Andrew Grogan) Reichert, Rebecca (Clay) Sloan, David (Turner Smith) Gerstle and Zoe Gerstle and 7 Greatgrandchildren: Raegan and Avery Alexander, Emily Mack, Myla Sloan and Helen, Brooks and Thea Gerstle.
