Anton Fuetsch passed away on Wednesday after a valiant battle with cancer. He touched so many lives with his gentle spirit and exceptional works of art.
Born in the Tyrol region of Austria, Anton developed a passion and talent at an early age for capturing nature in the form of wood carvings. At age 14, he began a four-year apprenticeship under his uncle, Professor Gottfried Fuetsch, a master sculptor and one of Austria's most honored sculptors. Anton's exceptional talent was recognized with a scholarship to study at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.
In 1969, Anton moved to San Francisco to further his artistic style inspired by the Romantic Movement of the early 18th century, an era known for its high reverence for nature. Anton's Catholic faith deeply influenced his many religious sculptures that reside in churches throughout California, the Midwest, and Austria. His work has gained national and international acclaim in numerous public and private collections.
Anton is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Yiu Wei; devoted children Suzanne and Andre Fuetsch of Dallas, Texas and Kylie and Joseph Fuetsch of Oakland, California and grandchildren Alexis, Andrew and Leighton. He is also survived by his brothers, Alois Fuetsch, Johann Fuetsch, Josef Fuetsch and sisters, Rosa Resinger, Cecilia Steiner and Theresia Unterweger, and many dear nieces and nephews.
Friends and family are invited to a visitation on Wednesday, July 7th, 5-7pm at St. Cecilia Chapel at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Lafayette, CA
and funeral service on Thursday, July 8th, 10am, St. Mary's Church, Walnut Creek, CA. Burial to follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
