Bob Batha Obituary

Robert John "Bob" Batha

Robert John (Bob) Batha, resident of Mill Valley, passed away peacefully October 13, 2018 at the age of 70. Bob lived his life to the fullest until October 6 when he experienced a massive stroke from which he could not recover. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Jessica, his beloved mother, Stella Batha, his brothers and sisters: Rick, Ted, Laurie (Vigoda), and Ellen (Jenkins); and numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his father Richard Batha.

Born in San Francisco on October 7, 1948, Bob lived his entire life in the Bay Area except for university studies at UC Davis (BS Biology) and University of Michigan (MS Zoology). Bob was a nature lover, adventurer, serious amateur photographer, world traveler, golfer, environmentalist, and great friend to many. He loved his family and friends and life itself. If you encountered him, either as friend or stranger, he usually had a big smile for you and interest in your life. As the oldest of five siblings, he looked out for them as he did with his friends, co-workers, and acquaintances. Bob was blessed with great humor, inquisitive intellect, and a sweet disposition. One could hardly not look forward to seeing Bob and spending time with him!

His love of nature, strong convictions, and attention to detail transferred readily to his career of 35 years at the State Bay Conservation and Development Commission. His diligence left Bay residents and visitors a legacy of protected shoreline and innumerable trails.

Upcoming service will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name will be accepted at any Wells Fargo branch toward a bench on a favorite Bay trail in Bob's memory. Indicate the Bob Batha Memorial Bench Fund.

I just learned of Bob's passing and was truly saddened. I wish Bob could have stayed with us a lot longer. I was not a close friend, but he and I developed a relationship while I renovated his home about 20 years ago. Business relationships can be volatile, and ours was no different. But in retrospect, it is difficult to find fault with the way Bob handled these situations. He was unerringly fair and friendly at all times. Even when a mistake caused all the clothing in his closet to become soiled with roofing debris, Bob remained calm, showed restraint, and was exceptionally kind towards the unwitting culprit (me).
Years later, he and Jessica gave my wife and I comforting and effective ways to deal with problems we were having with fertility. When we saw the news of his passing, my wife remembered some of the kind advice Bob had offered to us, all those years ago. Rest in peace, friend. I'm very sorry to see you go.
