I knew Conrad from my teen-age years and met him again after many years on my tour of duty on the USS Ranger, a Navy Carrier. He was the same then as he was later, always jovial and fun to be around.

Dear Marla, Karena, Eric and famlies:
Conrad was one of my closest Lifeguard mentors, teaching me many things about lifeguarding from the time I started in 1977 until I left in 1995. He was lots of fun and always cracking jokes. One time that distinctly comes to mind is back in 1991 when I showed up at Santa Monica HQ proudly displaying my fiancée Donna (still married). Conrad said “What I don't understand Schwichtenberg, is how did you ever get the common sense to marry such a together girl? We just busted out laughing.
He may have been a real jokester between rescues, but I remember every time he came rolling up Code Three in the rescue truck, he was efficient and calmly in control of the situation. I always knew he would back me up and do everything in his power to help the victim.
I have often reflected upon my time as guard, I feel strongly that there is nothing more noble than serving one another. In his own disarming style Conrad was consummate public servant, dedicating his life's work to helping those in need, in the water and out. The world is a much better place, thanks to the gifts that we, and countless others, were given by Conrad.
May he rest in peace in the bosom of our Creator,
Badd Schwichtenberg

Marla, Karena, & Eric and families, My deepenst sympathy on the passing of my cousin Conrad, He was the eldest of all the Evenstad clan. Even though I only met him twice in person, my mother (rest her sole) alway's spoke of him with love about all the antics he did, apparently he was quite a character. He is now up in heaven with all our passed Evenstads including his mother Anna and my Mother Edna and the rest of the aunt and uncles. I am sure they will all meet up and have a good time ! My memory of Conrad is when we were in North Dakota for our family reunion and he had those crazy 4th of July pant's on that were quite busy !! He was trying to get all 200 of us to stand for a picture while he was standing on a chair to get us all in. He was a funny guy and I will alway's remember him. RIP Conrad !
Love from your cousin, Beth Bristol Wajts

Conrad was a wonderfully warm, generous person. And a prankster. For my first trip to the US in the early 90s, Conrad and Marla were so generous to have me stay for several days. So, imagine me, an impressionable youth, just out of LA immigration, setting foot on US soil for the first time. This is pre email, pre facebook, pre mobile phone. My sole contact was a single phone number. Which went like this, made from a payphone at LAX:
"Hi is that Conrad? It's Julian here."
"Who?"
"Julian, Karena's friend".
"Who? Am I supposed to know you?"
"Ahh... "
"Ha ha just working you Julian. I'll pick you up in 10 minutes".
Welcome to the US. Thanks for making my trip such fun Conrad :)

I was sad to read of Conrad's passing. He was a classmate of mine at Notre Dame High School and I had the opportunity to reconnect with him after 50 years at our reunion last year. He was a good man and will be in our prayers.
