David Gershan Obituary

Dr. David C. Gershan

David Gershan, MD, passed away peacefully, in his home in San Francisco, CA on January 3, 2022, suddenly from heart-related issues. He was born on August 19, 1947, in Washington, D.C. to Sidney and Dorothy Gershan (deceased) and is survived by his sister Janie Gershan. He grew up in D.C. and the Maryland suburbs and was a long-time resident of San Francisco.

David was a natural artist who brought his artistic nature to all his varied endeavors. He loved gardening and cooking incredible meals for friends, delighting them with his originality, witty conversation, and deep knowledge. David donated his time and skills as a volunteer at many organizations, including cooking for Project Open Hand and providing medical care at homeless shelters. David learned to play cello after the age of 60 and organized a trio that played together weekly. He was a voracious reader and life-long learner. He loved hiking, traveling and being in nature. David had many and diverse circles of friends who will miss him deeply.

Dr. Gershan was a Board-Certified Family Practice provider and HIV Primary Care Specialist for over 25 years for the San Mateo County Health Department and Medical Center and other local clinics, as well as UCSF Positive Care/SFGH Ward 86. Until August 2012 he served as Medical Director of the Homeless Mobile Clinics of San Mateo and as Medical Director of the STD Clinic. He was a contributing instructor and speaker at UCSF and Stanford University on topics that included Complementary Medicine, STDs, HIV, and HPV. Dr. Gershan began his own private medical practice in Anthroposophic Medicine Primary Care in 1990 and practiced until his death, having earned his Diploma from the American College of Anthroposophic Medicine, and serving as a board member of the Physicians' Association for Anthroposophic Medicine.

An outdoor memorial will be held at a future time. For more information, please visit DavidGershan.com. If you wish, donations can be made to the Anthroposophy Society of the Bay Area, Project Open Hand, or SF Street Medicine and Shelter Health.
