Kenneth Wong Obituary

Kenneth Hay Wong July 5, 1936 - Nov. 1, 2011 Lost his nine-year battle with cancer in Alamo, CA. Loving husband, father, grand-father, uncle, and friend, he is survived by his wife, Janice, of 37 years, daughter Marissa (Andy Nonaka), son Christopher, brother Lawrence (Penny), sister Jeanette, and his two beloved grandchildren, Benjamin and Alyssa. A proud SF native, son of May Jung and Ming How Wong, he grew up in SF Chinatown and graduated from Washington High. Ken began his lifelong love of teaching as a camp counselor for the Chinatown YMCA, then worked 38 years for SFUSD as a wood/metal shop teacher, counselor and assistant principal. He was passionate about eating healthy, weight lifting, running and training for marathons/5k/10K, a capella singing, world traveling, flying, sailing, and keeping abreast of current and historical events. It was at the Chinatown YMCA that he met his Bostonian wife in 1970 and the two were married in 1974. An architect and visionary at heart, he designed and remodeled their Berkeley home in 1985 to reflect the "open concept" that is now so popular. He retired from SFUSD at 62, and didn't waste a second, delving into cycling, spending mornings in Golden Gate Park learning Tai Chi, doing household repairs in his and his friends' homes, golfing, meeting with family and friends over cheap eats, and traveling. Ken always loved a bargain. But his greatest love and what he wants to be remembered for most was that he was a family man. We will remember and cherish his joking nature, laugh, and smiling eyes forever. We will miss him dearly. His remains will be cremated and a celebration of life is being planned for Sunday, November 27, site to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to the Bruns House (Inpatient Hospice Facility) at 2849 Miranda Avenue, Alamo, CA 94507 or send an email to: [email protected]">[email protected]">[email protected]">[email protected] for more info on supporting Ken's passion for introducing inner-city kids to camping.

"In the end, all that matters are the ones who you love and care about, and those who love and care about you." Ken, you are surrounded by people who love and care about you...and you, in turn, have always love and care about them as well. We will miss you dearly. Then again, we know that you live in each and everyone of us who has been touched and blessed by your life. Rest in peace. With love and affection. Anne, Al, Ryan, and Lorens
