Lynn Margulis Memoriam

Lynn Margulis

Born March 5, 1938, she was an evolutionary biologist who had some wacky ideas. Her argument for the significance of symbiosis in the evolution of certain cells was widely rejected when she wrote about it in 1967. Nevertheless, she persisted. Years later her theory was borne out through advances in genomic science and DNA analysis, and she was awarded the National Medal of Science in 1999. Her academic career culminated in her appointment as Distinguished Professor of Geosciences at UMass Amherst, a post she held until her death on November 22, 2011.
