Nona Cox Obituary
Nona Jean Cox Born December 22, 1913 in Leavenworth, Kansas to Nona Grace and Emil Metschan, Nona Jean Cox of Portola Valley, California, passed away June 17th. Wife for 53 years of the late Morris Arnold Cox, who preceded her in passing in 1986, she resided in Menlo Park and The Sequoias of Portola Valley for the last twenty five years since his death. During their 53 years of marriage, she supported his amazing professional career that took them from Kansas City, Missouri to Burlingame, California in 1952 and finally, retirement in Pebble Beach, California for 10 years before returning to Menlo Park prior to his death. "Nonie" as she was called by her devoted family, was a dedicated hospital volunteer for several thousand hours of service at Peninsula Hospital in Millbrae, and also at the Community Hospital in Monterey. A superb cook, girl scout leader, amazing gardener and unconditionally loving mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and great-grandmother, she listened patiently, giving wise counsel when asked. A long time member of Menlo Park Presbyterian Church, Nonie was devoted to her Bible Study group for many years, volunteered at Filoli, and was also a member of PEO. She is survived by her daughter, Shirley Cox Matteson, son-in-law, Duncan Matteson, granddaughter Melissa Matteson Badger, her husband , Dr. James Badger, grandson Matt Matteson and wife, Betsy Matteson as well as five great grandchildren, Brady Badger, Brooke Badger, Brig Badger, Courtney Matteson and Sydney Matteson. She is also survived by her nephew Michael Metschan of Austin, Texas, his wife Sally and sons, Brent and Kent Metschan. As a devoted, gracious, loving lady she lived her long life with compassion, courage and elegance setting an example for all who knew her to emulate. A private family interment was held on June 20th at Skylawn Memorial Park and a celebration of her life is pending in July.
