Dick Sheridan passed away on January 25th after suffering from Lewy Body Dementia and Parkinson's disease for seven years . He endured his afflictions with great courage, patience, dignity, and of course ,the humor for which he was well- known

Dick was born in Brooklyn, New York and moved with his mother, Greta, and father, Joe,

to Monterey Park, a LA suburb, in California when he was very young. He attended St Stephens elementary school, and Cantwell High School . After military service in Korea, he attended and graduated from Loyola University and went on to medical school at Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he met his future wife, Margaret Nolan. After internship and residency at San Diego County Hospital, he and his family lived in Hacienda Heights and Whittier , California. Dick practiced Obstetrics & Gynecology in West Covina, Ca for 30+years . He was also certified in the Addiction Medicine specialty which he practiced for over 10 years. He and Marge relocated to Sonoma, Ca in retirement where Dick was very active in choral groups, writing groups and community theatre. He was an avid LA Dodger fan and a loyal friend of Bill W's for over 43 years.

He is survived by his wife Margaret, sons Peter

( Kimberly) and Andrew, and daughter Caroline (Russell Triplett), six grandchildren , and two great-grandchildren.

Richard saved my life by introducing me to AA, he did a 12th Step Call and then took me to meetings every night for a month. This took 6 hours out of his day. He was a tremendous man and physician. God bless you Richard, I´ll see you in Heaven shortly; of course, God is in charge of that!!

On the anniversary of my father´s death, I´m missing the man who - after once joining us for a Boy Scout hike on short notice in my youth - trudged up the snow covered trails of Mt. San Jacinto while carrying a Samsonite suitcase full of his camping gear. Why he didn´t make a pit stop to buy a Kelty back pack is a mystery, but that was just Dad...unpretentious and thrifty. And we all loved him for being the lovable version of himself. I think of you often, my dear father.

I think of you, and miss you, everyday, Dad. And I tell at least one of your jokes perhaps once a week to the nearest relative or friend ready for a few laughs. But I still haven´t found a soul willing to rotate the tires on my car when asked if there is anything he/she can do for me when I´m having an off day. Oh, the Dodgers beat the Giants in the playoffs this year. As you likely would have said had you been there for the victory party, "Take that, SF!" Your words, your outlook on each day, your very spirit for living have seen me through difficult times, even in your absence.... and I will forever love you for that.

Your son,

Andrew

In my eulogy at St. Leo's Catholic Church, I shared several anecdotes about Dad that spoke to the kind of man he was. Here's another, and, of course, Richard B. was the original storyteller:

Upon finishing one of his four years of medical school at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI in the late '50s, dad began the long, cross-country drive back to Monterey Park, CA to spend the summer with his parents. He said he made it as far as Gallup, NM, where his car ran out of gas. Another problem was that his wallet was out of money. Well, as dad put it, he subsequently sought out the monsignor at the local Catholic Church, and the generous priest was good enough to loan dad $10 to make it the rest of the way home. Once home, dad presumably took a summer job and quickly mailed the $10 back to the priest as promised.

Dad was resourceful, honest, hard working. And he always saw the solution to a problem, never living in it for long. He told that story like it was an adventure, not a predicament.

These are the kinds of stories I miss hearing dad tell. I loved and revered the man. May you rest in peace, Richard B. Sheridan M.D.
