Jack Comegys Obituary

Jack Comegys

SHREVEPORT, LA- John McLoyd Comegys died on Thursday, August 14, 2008 after a brief illness.

Born October 2, 1923 in Shreveport, LA, to the late William McLoyd and Rowena Scott Comegys, Jack spent his childhood in Marshall, TX before returning to this city. He graduated from Gulf Coast Military Academy and Centenary College, where his Kappa Alpha brothers nicknamed him "Slick." He proudly served as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946.

On August 4, 1948, Jack married Marilyn Driskell, who recently preceded him in death.

Surviving him are their daughters, Kennon Comegys, Scotty Denhollem, and Johnette Huguley (Don); grandchildren, Cara Smith, Jack Huguley, Clare Denhollem and James Denhollem; Jack's brother, Duke Comegys; nephews, Bill Comegys (Frances), Pops Comegys (Diane), Stafford Comegys (Marianne), Ripley Comegys (Beverly) and Dr. John Holcombe (Dawn); nieces, Sally Orginderf (Gary) and Marty Kymes (Mark) and step-brother, Glenn Mason.

Until his retirement, Jack was involved in various banking and financial concerns in Shreveport and was active in a number of civic organizations. Jack was gregarious and loved life. He was known to enjoy games of chance and rounds of golf. He was the first president of East Ridge Country Club and enjoyed having membership #1. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. A sweet, kind, loving man, he will be dearly missed.

Visitation will be held on Monday, August 18 from 5-7pm in St. Mark's Cathedral parlor. At Jack's request, his body has been donated to LSU Health Sciences Center. The family expresses sincere gratitude to Dr. Gary Dunn, Dr. Luis Tous, Dr. Wen Liu, and their associates. Special thanks is given for the unwavering support and kindness shown by the nursing staff at 7-East Step-Down Unit at Willis-Knighton Pierremont.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Centenary College of Louisiana, St. Mark's Cathedral or the charity of donor's choice.

To Jack,
I was blessed to have had you as my friend. You would make me laugh at the OG and the wonderful emails you would send would brighten my day. I believe people are brought in your life in moments when you need them and I think the yrs I have know you you brought me inspiration and laughter when I needed it the most and for that I am grateful. This world has lost a gentle and kind man and I am going to miss you deeply. Say hello to Marilynn and my son Stephen. Love , Chris

Dear Comegys family,

Our most fond memories of Jack are the blessings we offer at this time of immense sadness for your loss.

Our father, Glenn, shares his deep love for your father with each of you.

So many years, so many happy days there are to relate when your mother and dad brightened our hearts.

I hope that our families will have a chance to share the coming holiday season. You all are always a sweet welcome wherever we are.

In the spirit of family, we love you and send our prayers in honor of Jack and Marilyn. We wish you the peace of our Lord, the hope tomorrow brings, and the joy of knowing your father and mother served this world with their amazing lives so greatly valued.

Comegys girls, It will be a long, long time before i have the pleasure of meeting another fine couple like your parents. While i have been in the restaurant business for over twenty years i can't remember a finer couple. Fridays at Monjunis will never be the same. I always had wonderful conversations with your parents and your mom and i laughed until we cried almost every Friday.Again I will truly miss them but hope you will continue you visits.

SCOTTY /
I remember the fun we had showing your Father and Mother Chicago. We laughed at the drivers and ate delicious steaks at Lawrys. Your Father was so proud that you were studying to be a Lawyer.
On behalf of Butterscotch and Lemon we all share your sadness.

Dear Daughters,
As you cared for, honored, and cherished your Daddy, your Holy Father was pleased. Your Daddy was blessed with each of you and your love for him. May the Holy Spirit of God comfort your tears and your heart during this time of loss.

(For those that don't know, I have been Scotty's English penfriend for 45 years)

Dear Jack - in all those years, and especially in our teens, I never read a word of rebellion or disrespect from your daughter (unlike myself!), only loving adoration. When we met in 1981, you and Marilyn were the best hosts. You took David off with you on man's business at the office, and I stayed for shopping trips with Marilyn. You were the essence of a benign patriarch.

For Scotty, Kennon and Johnette this is a loss too soon and feels beyond bearing, I'm sure. Our parents' generation learned the hardest way imaginable to be courageous in adversity and we can take much from that.

With love

Dearest Johnette, Kennon, Scotty, Cara, Jack, Don and family-
I'm so terribly sorry to read about Mr. C. and to hear of all his medical issues of late from Johnette. Please know I am thinking of you all. I love y'all dearly and wish I could be there with you. My Mama and I were always grateful to Mr. C. for his efforts in her behalf at SBT. I hate that this comes so closely on the heels of losing your Mom. As I told Johnette on the phone, I wish there was something I could say to "make it better", but we all know there's not. Again, you are in my thoughts and prayers.
Love you all-
Pam

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to John McLoyd (Jack) Comegys our Brother in Arms and Fellow Legionnaire. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Jack. And to Jack it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during WW-II while serving in the U.S Navy and for his 35 years of dedicated service to the American Legion. Jack you were a dedicated supporter of the American Legion and a wonderful comrade. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,409 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Jack’s family and loved ones.
