SIDNEY — Cletus B. Poeppelman, age 92, of Hardin-Wapak Road, Sidney, Ohio, passed away of natural causes at his residence, early Monday morning, May 25, 2015.
He was born Feb. 10, 1923, in Anna, Ohio, to the late Anton and Elizabeth (Bertke) Poeppelman. On Aug. 16, 1952, at St. Michael Catholic Church in Fort Loramie, Cletus married Dorothy (Aselage) Poeppelman, who survives.
Also surviving are 12 children, Deborah and William Schutt, of Hammond, Indiana, Ronald and Marie Poeppelman, of Houston, John and Leigh Anne, Poeppelman of Elkhart, Indiana, Karen and Robert Gephart, of Sidney, Beverly and Wayne Gehle, of Maplewood, Mary and Gary Foltz, of Maplewood, Robert and Kristina Poeppelman, of Minster, Nancy and Michael Zizelman, of Maria Stein, Sherry and Jack Swartz, of Russia, Mark and Bonnie Poeppelman, of Sidney, Joan and Dennis Lichtenberg, of Sidney, and Neal and Tracy Poeppelman, of Sidney; 32 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; one sister, Eileen and Herman Dietz, of St. Marys; sisters and brothers-in-law, Georgie Poeppelman, of Dayton, Viola and Esther Dietz, of Botkins, Chris Barhorst, of Russia, and Edna Aselage, of Fort Loramie.
He was preceded in death by nine siblings, Andrew and Germaine Poeppelman, Marie and Elmer Severt, Alfred Poeppelman, Urban & Hilda Poeppelman, Mildred and Jerome Drees, Esther and Lawrence "Charlie" Kohnen, Roman and Blanche Poeppelman, Margaret and Herbert Severt, and Elizabeth and Bernard Aselage.
Cletus served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was retired from Consolidated Metco in Sidney where he had been a foundry molder. He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, and had been a past member of the Knights of Columbus. Clete enjoyed gardening, playing cards, and following his grandchildren's sporting events. Years ago he also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 28, 2015, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in McCartyville with the Rev. Ethan Moore presiding. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
Friends may call Wednesday 2 to 8 p.m. at Gehret Funeral Home in Fort Loramie, and Thursday 9 to 10 a.m. at the church.
Memorials may be made to Wilson Hospice Care or the Fort Loramie Rescue Squad.
