SIDNEY -- Dorothy J. Helman, age 93 of Sidney, passed away Tuesday, August 17, 2021 at 12:10 AM at Brookdale Sterling House in Troy, OH. She was born on July 24, 1928 in Shelby County, Ohio, the daughter of the late Ben and Florence (Gibbs) Potts. On September 5, 1948 she married Norris E.
Helman, and celebrated 62 years of marriage before his passing on November 22, 2010.
Dorothy is survived by six children, Patricia (Robert) Freund, Robert
(Cathy) Helman both of Sidney, Susan (Timothy) Rickey of New Carlisle, Carol Helman of Tipp City, Joyce (Preston) Powell of Westerville, and John Helman of Columbus, 10 grandchildren, Julie Freund, Amy (Joel) Bruns, Brian (Christine) Helman, Sarah (Jim) Fox, Angela (Josh) Bowman, David (Jessica) Rickey, Kristin (Josh) Garlough, Craig Helman, Ben (Zelpha) Powell, and Brian Powell, 16 great-grandchildren, Kaylee, Abby, Tori, Hayden, Seth, Kierstyn, Wyatt, Bella, Chase, Lucas, Hudson, Nolan, Emma, Ellie, Emma, and Gabe. Also surviving is sister, Grace McFadden of Jacksonville, FL, brother-in-law, Emerson Watkins of Sidney, sister-in-law, Cacelia Helman of Greenville, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Nancy Watkins, brothers-in-law, Bob McFadden and Lysle Helman, sister-in-law, Wauneta Helman, brothers and sisters-in-law, Margery and Marvin Wick, James and June Knouff, and Dale and Vera Helman, as well as several nephews.
Mrs. Helman graduated from Ft. Loramie High School as valedictorian and attended Otterbein College in Westerville, OH. Over the years she took an interest in reading, helping her husband with the family business, and spending time with her family. She was a member of Oran Christian Church, where she was active in the Women's Group. She also served as a poll worker for many, many years at the Shelby County Board of Elections.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, August 21, 2021 at 2 PM at Oran Christian Church with Rev. Dale Ritts officiating. Burial will follow at Houston Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 1 PM until the time of service at the church. Arrangements are in the care of Cromes-Edwards Funeral Home.
