SPRINGFIELD - James E. Dyas, 78, of Springfield died at 10:55 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009, at St. John's Hospital. He was born Aug. 6, 1930, in Cairo, the son of Edward and Catherine Sweeney Dyas. He married JoAnn Turman on Jan. 18, 1955.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Margaret Dyas.
He is survived by his wife, JoAnn Dyas of Springfield; two daughters, Margaret (companion, Chris Bergschneider) Wallner of Chatham and Rachelle (husband, Kevin) McCubbin of Springfield; seven sons, James L. (wife, Karen) Dyas of Pleasant Plains, William Edward Dyas of Springfield, Michael (wife, Gayla) Dyas of Dawson, Edward (wife, Debbie) Dyas of Fort Collins, Colo., John (wife, Crystal) Dyas of Pauline, S.C., Clifford (wife, Sabra) Dyas of Leoti, Kan., and Richard Dyas of Osage Beach, Mo.; 15 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a sister, Ann Weissinger of Cairo; a brother, Fred (wife, Diane) Dyas of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
James lived in Springfield since 1958. He was the manager at Herndon's Department Store and managed other shoe stores in the area. He was also a self-employed remodeling contractor.
He was a member of Christ the King Church. He was a graduate of St. Joseph High School in Cairo. He was a member of the United States Army, serving from 1948 to 1952.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home with prayers at 4 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 23, 2009, at Christ the King Church, with Monsignor David Lantz officiating. Burial will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail will provide military honors.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Make-a-Wish Foundation.
