DONALD WHIPPLE Obituary

After a courageous battle with cancer, Donald Lee Whipple, a.k.a Gramps, Big Bad Don, Whip, and Big Bite, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family on Sunday, Dec. 27th, 2009. He was 82 years young.

Don was born on March 29th, 1927 in Spokane, to Robert and Myrtle Whipple.

The Whipple family moved to Anacortes in 1943, where Don returned after serving in World War II.

Shortly after, Don married Marivonne Stover in Anacortes on August 28th, 1948 - recently celebrating their 61st anniversary!

Don was one heck of a saxophone player and loved to make music. With Don on the tenor sax, his brother Bill playing coronet and his brother Roy on the trumpet, the Whipple Brothers played with several local dance band.

Don owned Don's Evergreen Building Maintenance for many years, working hard to provide for his family Marivonne and their three children, Barry (Annette), Sheila (Allen) and Marla (Rick).

He is survived by his family, including his brother Bill and sister-in-law Virginia, nephew Ken (Chris), his grandchildren Barry Jr. (Kim), Scott, Carly, David (Annie), Allison (Nick), Holly (Phil), Heidi, Jenna, Donnie and his great-grandchildren Mackenzie, Trevor, Ben, Zach, Devin, Chance, Brycen, Ella, Abby, Kayana and Evan.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his older brother Roy.

Don was always busy - whether it was making his famous birdhouses, tending to his small orchard, tooling around in his shiny red Hummer, or having fun with all his grandchildren. He loved to ski, swim and fish and looked forward to his yearly fishing trips to Ross Lake with his friends and grandsons and his long getaways to Hawaii and Mexico with his wife.

The family would like to thank everyone at Skagit Hospice for their care and kindness. Per Don's request, there will be no funeral, but there will be a celebration of life at a later time.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Skagit Hospice (819 S. 13th St. Mt. Vernon, WA 98274) or Children's Hospital - Craniofacial Division (PO Box 50020/S-200 Seattle, WA 98145-5020).

Dear Marivonne, Barry, Sheila & Marla,

I am so sorry about your loss. Your family was a big part of my growing up. From riding Blacky and Brownie to being babysat (or tied in our rooms, Marla) by you! I know that he is with my Dad now and they are doing what they loved....having a good time! When Amanda and I moved back here, 3 1/2 years ago, I went to Mom's one night and they had the "old neighborhood" over for dinner. It was so good to see everyone, but I so remember Don sitting at the table and those eyes.... they just sparkled and were so wonderful! They were all telling stories about times when I was young and the things that they did. It was wonderful! Jim will miss him a lot too!!! I sometimes think that the three of them, Dad, Don and Jim, were just little boys having a lot of good times together, no matter if it was fishing or doing the Salmon BBQ.

Love to you all,
Kerri (Stump) Laird

Barry Jr and Family,
Sorry to hear about gramps. I only met him a few times at your house, what a great guy always smiling and happy to be with his family and their friends. Death leaves a hurt no one can heal but love leaves a memory no one can steal....speak of him often and keep his memory alive forever, he will always be with you especially at Ross Lake....if you catch a big one you'll no it wasn't your luck it was gramps!

Love you guys, Christy Dralle.

Hi Whipple Family,
I am very sorry for your loss of Don. I only knew him taking care of him and even then he was kind, sweet, and extremely funny. Just knowing him this little amount of time, the love he had for his family was very obvious. I feel lucky to have met him and to have taken care of him. I hope he got to ride in his Hummer as much as he had hoped. Marla - please let me know if there is anything I can do for you. I love you all.
