George Long Obituary

George Richard Long, 91, passed away after a brief illness, on January 14, 2022, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He previously resided at 122 Lynch Road, St. Mary's, PA. He was born on April 1, 1930, in Punxsutawney PA. He was the son of the late George Fredrick and Susan Ann Long (Tillett). In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his wife Georgia, brother, Donald, sister, Valere (Carr), sons Richard and Eric, granddaughter Chelsea and daughter in law Laurie. George was a graduate of Punxsutawney Area High School. He served in the United States Navy and Naval Reserve. He later moved to St. Marys, where he met his lifetime sweetheart, Georgia Rose Erich. They were married on May 5, 1951 and had six children: Debi Root (Paul), George Terry (Laurie), Richard, Tami Elliott, Tracie Steinert (Joe), and Eric. They have 16 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. In 1951, he became an employee of Stackpole Carbon Company, where he worked as an A/C specialist and Electrician. He was retired in 1992.
George was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge and Shriners International, where he participated in many charity events for children around the country. He especially loved being a member of the St. Marys Quarterback Club, where he spent many years contributing to its success. He attended all the football games until his health prevented it. George was a member of the PFL, CMF, Elks, Moose, and St. Marys Sportsman's clubs. He also enjoyed his daily tour accompanied by his faithful companion Wiener, which included a visit to the cemetery and a stop at the PFL to sign the book, have a Pepsi and visit with friends. He was a lifelong member of The Shiloh Presbyterian Church, where we will be having a Memorial Service for him sometime this summer. We hope to see all his friends and family there to share in the memories of this beloved man.
