Tamea Bowen Obituary
Born on January 6, 1955 in Mechanicsburg, PA, Tamea Phillips Weaver was the first of three children to Dr. Verner Phillips Weaver and Barbara Baum Weaver. The family moved to College Park, MD when her father became a professor at the University of Maryland in 1962. Tamea was attending the College of William and Mary in Virginia when the family moved to Lower Marlboro, MD in 1975. While summering there, Tamea met her future husband, Gregory Alvin Bowen, having been introduced by a friend and co-worker at her summer job at Calvert Memorial Hospital. Tamea graduated from the College of William and Mary in Spring of 1977 with a degree in Biology and married Greg that summer. The couple resided on Greg's family farm in Prince Frederick, MD where they built their home in 1981. Tamea was employed at Calvert Country School at the time, working with children with special needs. Tamea and Greg's two children, Emily Elizabeth and Nathan Weaver Bowen were born in 1981 and 1985. Tamea was a loving and devoted mother. She stayed home with her children throughout their education and ensured that they were able to take advantage of many varied activities and opportunities.
Tamea was a passionate advocate of literacy and libraries and was a dedicated volunteer for Calvert Library for many years. She joined the Friends of Calvert Library in 1998 and served as treasurer of that organization for 23 years. In 2023 she was awarded the Maryland Library Association's Outstanding Volunteer Award for her years of service. Tamea was also a proud supporter of the American Civil Liberties Union, the National Humane Society, the Democratic Party, and the American Chestnut Land Trust as well as a number of other charitable organizations. Tamea was an avid reader, alto vocalist in various choirs, and she loved to travel and spend time with family and friends.
Tamea was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer in the Spring of 2019. She fought the cancer valiantly and, thanks to her strength of spirit and the excellent health practitioners at Calvert Health Medical Center who were on her case, Tamea was able to meet and spend precious time with her two granddaughters, Celia, 3 and Alice, 1. Tamea passed away on October 19, 2024 at home and in the company of family.
Tamea was preceded in death by her sister, Virginia B. Weaver and is survived by her husband of 47 years, Gregory A. Bowen, her brother, Scott C. Weaver, her children, Emily E. Mudd and Nathan W. Bowen, and her grandchildren, Celia and Alice Meiklejohn Bowen.
A Celebration of Life is being planned in her honor. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to Calvert Library, the American Chestnut Land Trust, or the Calvert County Humane Society.
