Carol Feferman Obituary

Carol Feferman March 10, 1926 - Aug. 3, 2014 LAS VEGAS - Carol Feferman, 88, of Las Vegas, passed away from natural causes on Sunday, August 3, and will be missed by her family and friends. She was married for 65 years to the love of her life, Dr. Martin Feferman, who also was 88 when he died in 2011. Carol was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her youngest child Johnny died in 2012. Carol is survived by her two daughters, Las Vegans Peggy Selesner and Betty Judah, as well as four grandchildren, Lisa Wu, Dehlia Stevenson, Leigh Selesner, Jeremy Selesner, and great-granddaughter, Raven Wu. Born in 1926, Carol was the daughter of Jesse and Esther Feinberg, who had two other daughters, both now deceased. A good student, Carol was salutatorian of Bayonne High School when she graduated in 1943. She attended New York University, and graduated with a degree in English from the University of Michigan where she met her husband. Carol and Marty spent the best years of their lives in South Bend, IN, where he practiced medicine for 45 years. Carol loved to cook, socialize and go out for dinner with friends. A beautiful woman, she was named to the South Bend Tribune's Best Dressed List and was the subject of numerous articles about her "opening her home" to raise money for worthy causes. An accomplished mahjong player, she and her husband were world travelers, and visited Las Vegas many times before moving here in 2003. Carol and Marty were involved in many civic, religious and social undertakings. Carol gave of her time generously and was a charitable leader with an extraordinarily long list of affiliations. She was president of many organizations in South Bend, including the Women's Auxiliary of both Memorial Hospital and the St. Joseph's County Medical Society; the local chapter of the Red Cross; the Jewish Federation, South Bend Chapter; and the B'nai B'rith Women. She was co-chairman of Temple Beth-El Sisterhood and later honored with their distinguished service award; general chairman of the Women's Division of Jewish Welfare Fund Drive; special gifts chairman of the United Jewish Welfare Fund. She also served on the Women's Board of Northern Indiana Children's Hospital and the Cleland School Patrons Association. She had a special love for the Snite Museum at the University of Notre Dame. She began as a member of the friends of Snite, and from later served as president of the Board of Governors, where she was described as an "effective leader because of her unusually great personal style about her." In 1999, Carol and Marty were chairman and chairwoman of the Christmas Gala at the Snite, conducting annual fundraisers around the country for the museum. Thirty years earlier she had been quoted in a local publication regarding her re-appointment to a charitable position. She said "We are always asked why we must give more each year. Our answer is basic. Although we have given a great deal, it has not been enough." A memorial will be held for this remarkable woman Saturday, August 9, at 1 pm at Las Ventanas, 10401 W. Charleston Blvd., Las Vegas, where Carol and Marty spent the last years of their lives, made many friends and were grateful for their dedicated caregivers.
