Antonio P. Costa

NEW BEDFORD — Antonio P. Costa, 87, of Fairhaven, passed away Friday, October 3, 2008 at St. Luke's Hospital. He was the widower of Maria P. Costa, to whom he had been married for almost fifty years, and son of the late Camilo P. Costa and Celeste Isabel, both of Portugal. Although Mr. Costa was born in New Bedford, his parents returned to Portugal with him during the depression.

After marrying "Micas," he returned to New Bedford where he worked as a loom fixer and third hand at the Hathaway Mills for nearly 20 years. He also worked and retired from Revere Copper and Brass.

He had a caring heart and those close to him knew him to be kind and generous. His happiest moments were those spent with family, especially his grandchildren.

Mr. Costa enjoyed music and was self-taught on the clarinet and violin. He was a staunch democrat and enjoyed reading political commentary and nonfiction. He enjoyed debate and always stood on the side of the "little guy."

He is survived by two daughters Joyce Hillier and her husband William of Acushnet, and Olga Afonso and her husband Antonio Jorge of Portugal. He is also survived by four grandchildren Shawn Hillier and his wife Kristen of Danvers, Adam Hillier of Acushnet, Lucilia Afonso and Ana Afonso both of Portugal, and four great-grandchildren.

In accordance with his wishes visiting hours are omitted. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary's Church in Fairhaven on Tuesday at 9:00 AM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the American Heart Association 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701 or the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701. Arrangements are by the BOULEVARD FUNERAL HOME, 223 Ashley Blvd. Burial will be in River-Side Cemetery.
