Charles Hammond Obituary

Colonel Charles William Hammond, Jr.

On April 30, 2021, Colonel Charles William Hammond, Jr., USMC, Retired, passed away at age 72.

Charlie was born on December 8, 1948 in Spartanburg, SC to Bill and Vivienne (Roser) Hammond. He graduated from Spartanburg High School in 1967, and from the US Naval Academy earning both BS and MSEE degrees. He served in the Marine Corps for 20 years and worked in the telecommunications industry until his retirement in 2004. In 1973, he married the love of his life, Nancy Strickland Hammond. They raised two children, Virginia and Charlie, III.

Faith and family were Colonel Hammond's passions. As a young boy, Charlie fell in love with the North Carolina mountains from his summers spent at Camp Sky Valley. In his retirement, he lived out his dream of building a home on Lake Glenville in Cashiers. While living in the mountains, he was instrumental in launching Christ Anglican Church in the early 2000s. He was a dedicated service minister and prayer warrior, and two term Senior Warden of the Vestry. Over his lifetime, Charlie pursued a variety of hobbies including carving duck decoys, collecting rare books, and playing the banjo.

Charlie was preceded in death by his father, Bill and his mother, Vivienne and by his son, Charlie, III. He is survived by his wife, Nancy, his daughter, Virginia Hansbury, grandchildren, Grant, Clark, and Vivienne Benner, and by his son-in-law Michael Hansbury and his sons, Michael and Devin. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Beth and Mike Jordan of Georgetown, SC, and by his brother-in -law, Walter Strickland of Jacksonville, FL. A funeral service was held on May 21, 2021 at Christ Anglican Church in Cashiers, NC. Donations may be sent to the church at 464 US HWY 64E, Cashiers, NC 28717.
