Lloyd Lawson
UNION, SC-- Mr. Lloyd Franklin Lawson, 75, husband of Frances Sanders Lawson of 697 Vanderford Road, Union went home to be with the Lord after a tough battle with cancer, Tuesday, June 10, 2008. He was lovingly surrounded by his family and friends.
Mr. Lawson was born in Union, August 17, 1932, a son of the late James "Slim" Lawson and Sarah Vaughan Lawson. He was owner of L & L Garage and a member of Philippi Baptist Church. A devoted Christian who loved the Lord and served him faithfully, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and special friend to all.
Mr. Lawson was an avid race car driver and fan, from dirt track to Daytona. He and his wife of 54 years rode in one of Union's first Harley Davidson Motorcycle Clubs. Mr. Lawson was an active member of the Show-n-Shine Cruisers, the Union Co. Motorsports Club and the Independent Garage Association. He was a gifted mechanic who specialized in Volkswagons and known as the "V.W. Man" or "Light Foot Lawson". Mr. Lawson was a former president of the Open Hand C.B. Club, Minute Men Rescue Team, and a former Fire Chief of Philippi Fire Dept.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Susan Fowler and special friend Kenneth George and Donna Hooper and husband Mike; two sons, Michael Sanders and wife Alice and Joe "Toe Joe" Sanders; eight grandchildren, Kristie Fowler, Chad Hooper and wife Dawn, Tara Fowler and special friend Shawn Peace, Misty Fink and husband Shawn, Shannon Sanders and wife Angie, Michael E. Sanders and wife Ashley, April Lawson and husband Mark and Jimmy Jenkins; fourteen great-grandchildren, Gage Sanders, reared in the home, Carson Bannister, Devin Ivey, Shawn Peace, Caylee Lawson, Kaden Lawson, Jordan Hooper, Garrison Hooper, Dylan Sanders, Destiny Sanders, Hailey Sanders, Austin Hughes, Ashton Hughes and Matthew Sanders; three brothers, Joe G. Lawson and wife Susan, Donald "Ducky" Lawson and wife Ellen and John R. Lawson and wife Ruth; four sisters, Sarah Childers and husband Paul, Ann Patrick and husband Carl, Jean Harvey and husband Ken and Patricia "Trick" Vanderford; three brothers-in-law and three sisters-in-law reared in the home, Eugene Holcombe and wife Willie, Brenda Beheler, Claudia Carroll and husband Coleman, Joyce Moody, Wayne Grady and wife Mary Ann and Steve Grady. Mr. Lawson was predeceased by three brothers, Pete Lawson, Cotton Lawson and Fred Lawson, a sister Elizabeth "Peanut" Ridgeway and a great-grandson, Timothy M. Lawson, Jr.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, June 13, 2008 at Philippi Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale, Rev. Bob Lawson and Rev. Wayne Tyler. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Tony Archuletta, Mark Inman, Heath Ward, Tim DeHart, Bruce Bobo, Wayne Garner, Eddie Wayne Davis and Sammy Smith. The following are asked to sit in a group: members of the Men's Sunday School Class of Philippi Baptist Church, the Union Motor Sports Club, Minute Man Rescue Team, Show-N-Shine Club, the employees of NAPA, Team Aruba and staff and physicians of Gibbs Cancer Center and Palmetto Hematology and Oncology.
Visitation will be held 6:00-8:30 PM Thursday evening, June 12, 2008 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Philippi Baptist Church, 327 Philippi Church Road, Union, SC 29379.
