Elvira Radocy Obituary

Radocy, Elvira
Elvira Radocy passed away quietly in the early afternoon of Saturday, January 2nd, at her home in Meadville, PA. With her in the last hours were her daughter Jean Bartlett, Jean's husband Alan, her grandson Joshua Bartlett and Joshua's wife Erica. Elvira was 92.
Elvira was born in N.Y.C., Elvira M. Gmitro, of her Hungarian parents Henry Gmitro and his wife Katelin. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Arthur Gmitro of Chicago and her beloved husband Frank Radocy. Her son Robert lives in Berthoud, Colorado with his wife Lesley. Her granddaughter Rachel lives in Breckenridge, CO. with her husband Tim Gerken. Her oldest grandson Joel Bartlett lives in Glen Ellyn, IL. with his wife Laura. Elvira was lucky enough to become a great grandmother twice before she died. Eliana Bartlett, daughter of Joel and Laura was born in May 2015 and Heidi Gerken, daughter of Rachel and Tim was born just after Christmas, 2015. Those births, it appears, might have helped with the completion of her giving life.
Elvira was fiercely independent and was always proud that she was a "New Yorker"! Born on Halloween she loved the celebration and had numerous "witchy" dolls and Halloween paraphernalia, including a wonderful tall black witch hat. Her mother took sick when she was just thirteen and left their home in N.Y. so Elvira learned her independence and self-reliance raising herself while her father worked and her older brother was away at school. Elvira was generous and loving, raising her children and caring for her family in ways traditional of the WWII generations.
Elvira and Frank were married immediately after WWII and resided in Darien, CT., at 16 Wakemore St., where they raised their children. Elvira moved to PA. in 1999 more than a decade after her husband passed to live near her daughter and family. She was able to live on her own until the last 6 weeks of her life.
She worked at Peabody Engineering in Stamford, CT. both during and after the war then focused on home after her children were born. Before retiring she worked for over ten years at the Stamford Library (Turn-of-River and Ferguson Branches) and volunteered thousands of hours at the Stamford Hospital Thrift Shop.
She lived a very full and happy life and only really began to see her health decline in the last year.
Her feisty spirit and loving presence will be dearly missed by all of her family and friends.
