David Frank Obituary

FRANK, David Congdon
Age 72, of Eacher Hollow Road, Horseheads, NY, passed away at home on January 30, 2009. Dave was born in Westfield, PA, to Devello and Elsie (Congdon) Frank. He graduated from Hammondsport Central School then joined the Army in 1955. He attended West Point Prep School and was discharged in 1957. Dave received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Education from SUNY at Albany and a Master of Arts degree in Business Education from Western Kentucky University. He played varsity soccer and basketball in college, was in the Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities and was president of his fraternity, Alpha Pi Alpha. In 1961 he married Elizabeth Schnars of Ballston Spa, NY. He taught high school classes at Silver Creek and Potsdam NY before beginning a long career at Corning Community College, serving as Professor of Business Administration from 1965-1993. During his tenure at CCC he served as Associate Dean of Faculty and Dean of College Services. He belonged to the National Business Association, the American Association of University Professors, and the Eastern Business Teacher's Association. He also served as an officer in the Corning Rotary. "Big Ed" retired in 1992 to garden and travel with Liz and their dogs, Jessie, then later, Coach. He took up fly fishing, concentrated his gardening efforts, read novels, logged his woodlot, followed the Yankees at spring training, and never missed an opportunity to see the county fair. Kind, honorable, generous and optimistic to the end, he had a wry sense of humor and an explosive laugh. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Liz (Schnars); sons Gregg of Westmoreland, NY; David II and wife Kelly of Hudson, NY; brother, Patrick and wife Yvonne of Vienna, VA; sister, Candace Rhea of Syracuse, NY; grandson David III and granddaughter Olivia; and several nieces and nephews. There are no calling hours. Private graveside services will be held at South Napoli Cemetery at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Corning Community College Foundation - David C. Frank Scholarship Fund. Information regarding the fund at (607) 962-9458.

Liz,
I send my note of condolence to you from Strong Memorial Hospital where my son remains hospitalized. Nonetheless, know that you and the boys are in my prayers. Dave's creativity in dealing with adverse situations was always an inspiration to me. Unique and gifted, he was humble in saying he was fortunate to have you for his wife. Yes, his dog's photo held the place of honor on his desk at CCC.

My deepest sympathies to your family on the loss of a truly good man. 12 years of highschool and I did not like or get math until I took it from Mr. Frank at CCC. He turned my whole life around by giving me my first success in the dreaded subject of math, all the other classes were easy after that. Sweet peace to a good man. My daughter is at CCC now, I wish she had him for math!

Dear Liz, Dave and Gregg
My deepest sympathy to you for your loss. I have many fond memories of Mr. Frank form the days when young Dave and I were playing music at your house. I can still see him sitting in the living room chair near the coal stove petting "Frisbee" the dog while watching TV. He always treated me like family when at your house and I know he will be missed by all that knew him.
